🥔 Trying a different potato planting method this year… Instead of laying them in a trench, we broadforked the bed, raked in a little fertilizer, and planted each seed potato about 10 inches apart using a post hole digger. The soil already had a lot of compost in it, so it didn’t need much added fertility. Last year we tried the Ruth Stout method with straw… and it worked… but the leftover wheat seed in the straw turned into a weeding nightmare. 😅 We’ll see how this new method performs. How do you plant your potatoes? #gardening #potatoes #homestead

That’s why I grow my own. Potatoes consistently rank as one of the most sprayed crops, and testing has shown they can carry multiple pesticide residues. Washing and peeling can help, but some residues can remain, even after washing. Because potatoes grow underground, they can also absorb chemicals from the soil itself. If your family eats potatoes regularly, that’s something worth paying attention to. Growing your own gives you control. You choose what goes in your soil, what gets sprayed (or not sprayed), and how they’re handled from planting to harvest. I plant certified organic seed potatoes from Wood Prairie Family Farm. They specialize in organic seed potatoes, and I’ve had great results with their varieties over the years. And when my homegrown supply runs out, I buy organic. To check out Wood Prairie’s selection (my top picks: Purple Viking and Huckleberry Gold) and a discount off your order, comment WOOD PRAIRIE and I’ll send it your way. 🥔 Also, you’ll notice I plant one potato or potato piece per square in my Garden in Minutes Garden Grids. They are perfect for plant spacing and ample irrigation, which potatoes need to thrive. To learn more about the Garden Grids and to get a discount, comment “GARDEN MIN”

Do you grow potatoes? It's one of our favorites and stores very well. In our area, Presidents' Day marks the start of potato planting season and we couldn't wait to get the first succession in the ground. We planted whole seed potatoes and follow very simple steps: 🥔 Dig a trench 4-6 inches deep in loose soil. 🥔 Add slow release fertilizer, we use @microlifefertilizer Ultimate and added spent wood pellets to the soil. 🥔 Place the potatoes in the trench, eyes facing up about 12 inches apart in rows about 18 inches apart. 🥔 Cover the potatoes with soil and wait. Stay tuned for Part 2: Once we see growth. Follow along with @aboutsixacres for more gardening and daily homestead life. Planted 3 varieties: Yukong Gold, Red La Soda, Kennebec. Harvest ~ 90 days #plantingpotatoes #springgarden #texasgardening #homesteadgarden #growyourownfood

If you’re looking to try growing potatoes from the store, here’s what I’m trying And as a side note, I will also be doing seed potatoes - getting two methods going this year and seeing how they go 😎 For this method, I have 6 decent sized potatoes that are sprouting 🪴 For each of them, I will be: - cutting them into smaller chunks, aiming for two sprouts per chunk of potatoe - after cutting, letting the cut side sit face up and drying for a few days - planting these (sprout side up) in one of my raised beds a few inches down, once they start to grow in a few weeks I will add soil as they grow taller 🪴 A few tips people have suggested: - avoiding compact soil, some mentioned even adding some sand to help it be crumbly - haven’t decided yet if I’m trying that because I don’t have sand at the moment! - mulching the top, helping the soil not dry out 🪴 Have you grown potatoes this way? Leave some of your favorite tips in the comments. Always excited to add new fun things to the garden! Get out there and grow something weird, friends ✌️ #growingpotatoes #backyardgarden #momlife #nashvillegarden #motherhoodunfiltered

There are many ways to grow potatoes, and yes — potatoes are a humble root vegetable that can be used in so many ways in the kitchen 🥔🌱 From roasted and mashed to soups and casseroles, potatoes are a true garden-to-table staple. Today I’m sharing one of the simplest potato growing methods: ✨ No chitting ✨ No digging trenches ✨ No hilling with soil I simply lay seed potatoes directly on the soil, then cover them with untreated straw. As the plants grow, I keep adding more straw to cover the stems. That’s it. When it’s time to harvest, just pull back the straw (straight to the compost pile!) and you’ll find clean, no-dig potatoes ready to turn into delicious homegrown meals. Easy, beginner-friendly, and perfect for raised beds or garden plots. #treehousegardenkimberly #seedtheday #potato #growyourownfood #gardentips

🥔 STOP. Don’t miss potato season again! 😆 “I should try growing potatoes someday…” — YOU 👉 This is someday. Right now is the perfect planting window in North Texas, and potatoes are hands-down one of the easiest, most satisfying crops you can grow. No fancy setup. No greenhouse. No gardening degree required. Just: ✔️ Dig a shallow trench (or use a container) ✔️ Toss them in ✔️ Cover with soil ✔️ Water That’s basically it. A few months later? You’re digging up homegrown potatoes like buried treasure. (Kids LOVE it. Adults do too, honestly.) And here’s the kicker — 🥔 Seed potatoes are only $2 per pound at Rooted In. Cheap. Easy. Crazy productive. If you’ve got sun and dirt, you can grow potatoes. 📍 12804 Pelzel Rd. Pilot Point TX 76258 Come grab a bag before they’re gone. Potatoes planting tutorial 🥔 We planted Red Lasoda this year. We ended up with 5 rows which is the most potatoes we have ever grown. Here in Louisiana potato planting time is late January through February. It will take 2- 4 weeks for the potatoes to come up out of the ground and 90-120 days until we can dig them up. Whenever the leaves start turning yellow and dying, it's time to dig potatoes.

Chitting season is here in Alabama 🥔🌱 Now’s the time to start prepping your seed potatoes. Potatoes are a storage crop, meaning a they last a long period of time after harvest, making them one of the most efficient crops you can grow at home. When cutting seed potatoes, make sure each piece has 2–3 eyes. After cutting, place them in a cool, dry area with natural light (but no direct sunlight). This allows the potatoes to form a protective layer and directs more energy into strong, healthy shoots for planting. Potatoes are one of my favorite crops to grow because 👇 • They’re a storage crop • A handful of seed potatoes can yield several pounds of food • They store well after harvest • They’re affordable, filling, and nutrient-dense Chitting helps channel energy into strong shoots, and doubles the opportunity for more potatoes setting you up for a better harvest. Contrary to popular belief—potatoes are healthy 🥔 They’re rich in potassium, vitamin C, fiber (especially with the skin), and complex carbohydrates that fuel your body well. How we prepare them matters more than the potato itself 🤍 What potato varieties are you planting this year? 👀👇 #potatoes #regenerativeagriculture #gardensofinstagram

Potatoes are one of the easiest, most satisfying crops you can grow, but a few small mistakes can seriously impact your harvest. Here’s your no-fluff guide to planting potatoes: 🥔 1. Don’t plant grocery store potatoes Buy certified seed potatoes. Grocery potatoes are often treated to prevent sprouting and can carry disease. 🥔 2. Cut + cure correctly If your seed potatoes are large, cut them into chunks with 1–2 “eyes” each. Let them sit out 24–48 hours so the cut sides callous over. This prevents rot in the soil. 🥔 3. Soil matters (a lot) Loose, well-draining soil is everything. Hard clay = small sad potatoes. Mix in compost. They like slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). 🥔 4. Plant depth + spacing Plant 3–4 inches deep. Space 12 inches apart. Rows 2–3 feet apart. (Or grow them in grow bags if you’re short on space 👏) 🥔 5. Sunlight Full sun. 6–8+ hours minimum. 🥔 6. Water consistently Even watering = even potatoes. Inconsistent watering = cracked or misshapen potatoes. 🥔 7. The MOST important step: Hilling When plants are 6–8 inches tall, mound soil up around the stems. Keep hilling as they grow. This prevents green potatoes (which are toxic) and increases yield. 🥔 8. Watch for pests Colorado potato beetles LOVE them. Check leaves regularly and hand-pick if needed. 🥔 9. When to harvest • For baby potatoes → harvest a few weeks after flowering. • For storage potatoes → wait until foliage dies back. Let them cure in a dark, cool place before storing. — If you’ve ever felt intimidated by growing food, start with potatoes. They’re forgiving, productive, and incredibly satisfying to dig up. And yes… there is nothing more homesteader-coded than pulling dinner out of the dirt.
