Students lost their ability to debate. They’re uncomfortable disagreeing, even for fun. Philosophy thrives on disagreement, but their muscles aren't flexed. The questions you ask your students form intellectual habits, and asking follow-up questions is a vital part of how those habits are formed. When you ask students to explain their answers, provide examples or comparisons that prove their point, or ask them to clarify by using an analogy, you are helping them use logic as Sister Miriam Joseph intended—as “the art of arts because it directs the very act of reason.” Do you already ask questions that challenge your students to answer your questions more completely? Or could you improve your approach to follow-up questions? #classicaleducation #classicalchristianeducation #classroomculture #socraticmethod

99% of teachers say critical thinking is their number one goal. And then they go back to their classrooms and lecture. Socrates had no classroom no technology and no curriculum. Yet he built the most powerful thinking method in human history. The secret was never the answer. It was always the question. 🧠 Is explicit instruction a "pedagogy of poverty"? Dr. Sarah Powell pushes back on claims that explicit instruction limits thinking, explaining that it supports both conceptual and procedural understanding when done well. Explicit teaching doesn’t promote shallow learning. It is the path to deep understanding. 👉 Watch the full episode with Anna Stokke & Sarah Powell @ https://youtu.be/F9ws7cOrWbE 📺 Subscribe for more evidence-based teaching insights #ChalkandTalk #ExplicitInstruction #MathTeaching #LearningScience #ScienceOfMath #PodcastClip 🎙️

Critical Thinking: Telling Children Facts vs Teaching Them to Think There are two kinds of learning environments. One says: “Here are the facts. Memorise them.” The other says: “What do you think? Why might that be? How can we find out?” The difference is powerful. When children are only told facts: • They depend on adults for answers • Learning becomes passive • Curiosity slowly fades But when children are encouraged to ask questions, think deeply, and search for answers with a guiding hand: • They develop reasoning skills • They learn how to evaluate information • They build confidence in their own thinking • They become independent learners A guiding adult does not disappear. Instead, they: ✅ Prepare the environment ✅ Ask thought-provoking questions ✅ Provide resources ✅ Support the search for truth The goal is not to produce children who can repeat information. The goal is to raise children who can analyze, question, and understand the world for themselves. Education should not just fill the mind. It should train the mind to think.

When classroom discussions feel stuck, it’s often because students are only seeing one side. 🤔 Here’s a simple thinking routine that helps them explore multiple perspectives: Circle of Viewpoints. Instead of rushing to the “right answer,” students are invited to step into different viewpoints connected to a topic. A character, a group, or even an idea. Then comes the shift. They respond using three prompts: • I’m thinking… • A question I have is… • My perspective is… This moves the classroom from answering to exploring. 🧠 Students begin to question, reflect, and understand different sides without needing to defend their own immediately. It works especially well when conversations feel repetitive or stuck. It creates space for curiosity, deeper thinking, and more meaningful dialogue. 🌱 If you want more thinking routines like this, Comment “Routine” and I’ll share them with you. 💬 [thinking routines classroom, circle of viewpoints, IB teaching strategies, classroom discussion strategies, student perspective thinking, inquiry based learning, critical thinking classroom, Project Zero thinking routines, classroom engagement ideas, student reflection strategies, teaching for understanding, IB educator tools, classroom dialogue techniques, student questioning skills, deeper learning strategies, Teachers Help Teachers] #ThinkingRoutines #IBTeaching #ClassroomDiscussion #CriticalThinking

Most students (and quite a few parents) look at the curriculum and ask: "When am I ever going to use Pythagoras' Theorem in a meeting?" The truth? You might not. But focusing only on the subjects misses the "Hidden Curriculum"—the professional framework school builds before we ever receive a paycheck. 💼 Here is why the classroom is actually a 14-year career simulation: 1. Punctuality is a Delivery Window 🕒 That 8:50 AM bell isn’t just a school rule. It’s a 9:00 AM board meeting. It’s a client delivery window. It’s a flight departure. If you can’t manage a morning commute to a classroom, you’ll struggle with the logistics of a high-stakes career. School is where we learn that "on time" is the baseline for trust. 2. The Uniform is "Work Mode" 👔 Whether it’s a blazer or a polo, a uniform is a psychological trigger. It teaches us to separate our personal identity from our professional persona. From surgeons and pilots to engineers and baristas, most of the world wears a "kit." Learning to respect a dress code is the first step in professional branding. 3. The Hierarchy (The Org Chart) 🏢 School provides a safe space to navigate authority: Classmates: Your first colleagues and collaborators. Teachers: Your direct line managers. Heads of Year / Assistant Heads: Middle Management. Headteachers: The CEO. Understanding how to communicate across these levels with respect is the foundation of corporate emotional intelligence (EQ). 4. Homework = Closing the Deal 📉 Completing an assignment isn’t just about the grade. It’s about the "Handover." In the workplace, homework becomes a project deadline, a pitch deck, or a contract. If you don't learn to finish the "boring" tasks at 15, you won't have the stamina to close the $100k deals at 25. The Bottom Line: English, Maths, and Science provide the knowledge, but the school environment provides the discipline. We aren't just teaching kids how to pass tests; we're teaching them how to be reliable, professional, and employable human beings. Agree? Or do we need to rethink how we bridge the gap between education and the workplace? 👇 #Education #CareerDevelopment #FutureOfWork #SoftSkills #Mentorship #Leadership
