We’ve all heard it: “You’re fine, it’s just stress. Have you tried breathing?” It sounds harmless, but for someone with high-functioning anxiety, especially a “good girl” who’s spent years managing everyone else’s feelings, these words can feel invalidating. It’s not that you’re imagining it. Your body, mind, and nervous system are working overtime. Dismissing symptoms doesn’t just ignore the problem, it reinforces the belief that your experience isn’t real, that your feelings aren’t important, and that asking for help is somehow wrong. Over time, this can increase anxiety, shame, and self-doubt. Validating someone’s experience doesn’t require a “fix.” Sometimes the most powerful thing a clinician (or anyone) can do is listen, acknowledge, and guide them toward understanding and support. Your feelings are real. Your nervous system matters. It’s scary not knowing what’s coming next. It’s uncomfortable not being in control. And sometimes you feel like you’re just along for the ride wondering what God is doing.
