Era el helicóptero de Surf Life Saving, un grupo de socorristas voluntarios que vigilan desde el cielo las costas australianas para proteger a las personas de posibles ataques de tiburones. En este caso, habían avistado a un gran ejemplar de tiburón blanco de alrededor de cuatro metros y medio. Last Friday, something extraordinary happened, not in a classroom or on a stage, but on a quiet street during lunchtime. While returning to school from TAFE lunchbreak, a group of Year 12 students noticed a commotion across the road. Someone had collapsed and was unresponsive. Without hesitation, Finn, encouraged by his mates Christian, Callum, Cael and Kien went to help. Drawing on his CPR training that he had recently completed at school and through his volunteer work at the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club, Finn assessed the situation and immediately began CPR. After a series of compressions, the man began breathing again. When he stopped a second time, Finn calmly began CPR once more and brought him back a second time. Finn stayed with him, placed him in the recovery position, monitored his breathing, and passed crucial information to the paramedics until the ambulance arrived. Once the man was safely in their care, Finn went back to school. What stands out most is not just his bravery, but his humility. When asked about it, Finn simply said, “I didn’t even think about it.” He even went home and told his dad about his Cert II Engineering Pathways coursework first, only later remembering to mention that he had saved someone’s life. When interviewed and asked about Finn’s actions, Christian and Callum spoke with enormous pride about their mate, describing him as the kind of person you’d want beside you in a crisis. With the support from all four classmates, quick thinking and encouragement were just as important on the day. This is what it means to be part of the CBC community: to act with courage, to use your skills in the service of others, and to step up not for recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do. We are incredibly proud of Finn, and of the mates who supported him.
