It looked like: • 4 egg retrievals, 3 failed transfers, & 2 surrogates • A cute bucket of debt • A community that helped us raise $30,000 selling everything from lamps to VHS tapes. This story was heartbreaking but it underscores the crisis of an unregulated, out of control Big Fertility industry where babies can be created in test tubes and gestated in surrogates by virtually anyone with the cash on hand. The natural order has guardrails built in. Surrogacy hurts children and opens the door to many abuses. Some people say, well, how is surrogacy and IVF any different from adoption? They are radically different. This tragic case could not have happened with adoption because of the existing guard rails in that system. But this is the most important difference: IVF and surrogacy meet adult needs and desires, at the expense of the child, while adoption meets the child’s needs. Adoption is a solution to a tragic case where a biological parent can’t parent but heroically allows another couple to parent instead, giving the child the best opportunity for a loving, stable family. IVF and surrogacy involve the risky creation of new lives, opening the door to freezing and discarding countless new lives.
