Type “Word Work” 💚💜 Decoding & Encoding: Both work on the essential skills of blending and segmenting, which are required when learning how to read and spell! This models how to break a word down based on the vowels. You can also break this word into morphemes once those meaningful units have been taught! 🤩 im + port + ant These mats are great for moving back and forth between these skills. The sentence helps to connect with meaning. You can also write the definition. 🥳 Do your students need this type of practice? #phonics101 #scienceofreading #learningtoread #learningtospell #decode #encode #syllables #bigwords #phonics #phonemicawareness #firstgradeteacher #teachersofinstagram #homeschool #scienceofreadinginstruction #structuredliteracy #wordwork #teachermom

Do you know what makes a syllable open or closed? 📚 Closed syllables end with a consonant like in “cat”. 📚 Open syllables end with a vowel and the vowel says its long sound like in “me or hi”. Teaching this concept helps your child decode words, read fluently, and build strong early literacy skills. In this video, I show a simple craft activity to make learning open vs. closed syllables fun and hands-on for your elementary-aged child! Let me know what questions you have in the comments! #readingtutor

The VCCV syllable rule is a simple way to break words into syllables. It stands for Vowel-Consonant-Consonant-Vowel. It works like this 🔽 1. Look for a word with two vowels separated by two consonants (like “basket”). 2. Split the word between the two consonants. 3. The first half of the word is first syllable word and the second half is second syllable word. More examples : Basket - bas/ket Velvet - vel/vet Absent - ab/sent Window - win/dow Number - num/ber Kitten - kit/ten Hunter - hun/ter Contest - con/test Campus - cam/pus Laptop - lap/top Doctor - doc/tor Person - per/son Pencil - pen/cil Tunnel - tun/nel Winter - win/ter Custom - cus/tom Tender - ten/der Seldom - sel/dom Why to do this ? This pattern is useful for recognizing syllable breaks in words, especially for pronunciation and spelling in English. Hope this helps . Here’s the tea🍵 ⬇️ But first make sure to follow @droppinknowledgewithheidi for more quick reading tips & comment SNACK to get this sheet FREE! 📖 Open and closed syllables might sound like linguistic jargon, but they’re the secret sauce behind fluent reading! When we teach kids about these syllable types, we’re essentially equipping them with the superpower to tackle OVER 70% of words they encounter! Around 50% of words are a series of closed syllables and around 20% of words contain open syllables. Kids just need to know the difference between long and short vowels to be able to work with these syllable types. 💡Closed syllables are where the vowel is “closed in” by a consonant…. (man, tac, hip).. and this makes the vowel short. 💡Open syllables are where the vowel is not closed in … (he, go, hi).. and this makes the vowel long. Want some resources to get your kids practicing open and closed syllables? Head to my website/TpT or comment SNACK & I’ll send you the link! Are you teaching these syllable types? If your child can read open and closed syllables successfully you’re ready for this activity! Breaking words into syllables helps readers see how words are organized, not memorize them or guess their way through. When students learn to identify open and closed syllables inside longer words, reading suddenly feels doable instead of overwhelming. Here’s why this matters: • It reduces cognitive load • It gives students a clear plan when they see long words • It builds independence and confidence • It sets the stage for multisyllabic reading This is one of my favorite resources by @keepreadingandlearning comment link and I’ll send it your way! #syllables #phonemicawareness #homeschool

Counting syllables! A couple different ways to find how many! •pound it to find how many “beats” •hand under chin to count how many times your chin drops •hum the word. Each time you hear your voice is a syllable! The vowel sound is what makes your chin drop and you hear your voice on the vowel!
