De Moivre’s theorem is a fundamental result in complex numbers that connects powers of complex numbers to trigonometry. It states that if you take a complex number in polar form, written as cos(θ) + i·sin(θ), and raise it to the power n, the result is cos(nθ) + i·sin(nθ). This relationship makes it very easy to work with powers and roots of complex numbers, since multiplying a complex number by itself n times just multiplies the angle by n. The theorem shows the deep link between algebra and trigonometry, and it also serves as the foundation for many results in complex analysis, number theory, and Fourier analysis. One powerful application of De Moivre’s theorem is in integration, especially when dealing with trigonometric functions. Many integrals that at first glance look difficult, such as those involving high powers of sine and cosine, can be simplified by expressing them in terms of complex exponentials using De Moivre’s identity. For example, instead of trying to integrate cos⁵(x) directly, you can rewrite cosine in terms of exponentials, expand the expression, and then integrate term by term. This transforms tricky trigonometric integrals into manageable algebraic problems. In this way, De Moivre’s theorem provides a systematic method for simplifying integrals and uncovering elegant solutions that would otherwise be very hard to see.
