Starting from the ground, the entire movement happens in a single explosive push upward toward a suspended target. One hand reaches at full extension while the rest of the body must stay coordinated enough to prepare for a controlled landing. This athlete is Emily King, representing Team Yukon at the Arctic Winter Games, competing in the One Hand Reach. The event is rooted in traditional Arctic Indigenous sports and showcases strength developed through real world movement patterns. Touching the target is only part of the challenge. The attempt is judged on control, requiring a clean landing and full balance at the end, making precision just as important as power. Original Video Credit: @goteamyukon (No copyright intended. Competing at the Arctic Winter Games, athlete Emily King of Team Yukon demonstrates a movement pattern that defies standard physics. Starting from a grounded, crouched position, the athlete must generate enough vertical force to propel their entire body upward while maintaining balance on a single hand. The objective is to touch a suspended target—often a small seal-skin ball—at maximum extension, all while the other hand remains tucked away and the rest of the body stays perfectly coordinated for a controlled landing. The technical difficulty of this maneuver lies in the transition from static equilibrium to dynamic explosion. Judges do not only look for the touch; the attempt is only valid if the athlete completes a "clean" landing without their feet or free hand touching the floor prematurely. This requires a massive amount of "proprioception"—the body's ability to sense its own position and movement in space—to prevent the center of gravity from shifting and causing a collapse. To prepare for this, athletes spend years developing specific strength in the wrist, triceps, and oblique muscles to handle the sudden load of their entire body weight. Rooted in traditional hunting and survival skills, Arctic sports like the One Hand Reach were originally designed to maintain physical readiness and mental toughness in extreme environments. Today, it stands as a premier showcase of functional strength developed through real-world movement patterns rather than gym-based isolation. The precision required to hit a target while suspended in mid-air on one arm makes it one of the most visually striking and physically demanding events in the global indigenous sports circuit. Could you balance your entire body weight on one hand for even a few seconds, or do you think your core would give out immediately?

At @whitehorse2026, sport, culture and community come together in powerful ways. Inuit Arctic sports and Dene games challenge athletes’ strength, agility and endurance, while reflecting generations of knowledge rooted in survival and connection to the land. Beyond competition, the Games foster confidence, cultural pride and leadership among northern youth. “It doesn’t mean it’s me versus you; it’s me versus me.” Explore how Indigenous culture continues to shape the Arctic Winter Games and the athletes at its heart at the link in our bio. 📍 Whitehorse, Yukon 📸 Story and Photography by @spatzilly

Today I checked out the one hand reach and two foot high kick events - just a couple of the traditional Arctic sports at the 2026 Arctic Winter Games. A highlight had to be seeing Petra Amossen from Team Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) claim gold and break the Arctic Winter Games record for Women’s two foot high kick with a spectacular 80 inch leaping kick. This was a full six inches higher than the nearest competitors! #Whitehorse2026 #ArcticWinterGames #WhatWeAreMadeOf

Do you know this Dene game? Team Yukon athlete Lexi Fields-Birckel explains how finger pull is played at the 2026 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse. An intense test of strength that can pull ligaments, finger pull also helps build the strength needed to lift a heavy fish by the gills. #CBCSports #CBCIndigenous #AWG2026 #Whitehorse2026 #ArcticWinterGames
