To me, the iPod represents a golden age of music enjoyment, before streaming gave us access to everything. The nature of the system meant that we had to share or purchase music, making enough of a barrier so that the acquisition of new album felt special. And the device was a purpose-built product that did what it did really well. It’s been really refreshing to use this 5th gen iPod as a primary listening device again, and it’s made me reflect on the current state of our relationship with technology. We are drowning in algorithms, suggestions and advertisements. There’s very little that comes out today that gives me as much delight as interacting with this 20 year old device. Is today’s tech serving us or are we a slave to it? I highly recommend resurrecting the old iPod that’s sitting the back of your junk drawer :) This one needed a new hard drive, battery and front plastic, and now it’s as good as new (if not better). I even picked up some old wired Apple headphones for old times sake. I love the feeling of giving some life to something that sat dormant for so long. Every time I reach for this device I find myself deep in an album I forgot about, deepening my connection to art that I love. And, to me, that feels like a healthier relationship with technology.
