Congrats to Gnomon student Jack Carraher (@jack.carraher), who won “Best of Term – Character | Stylized” during the Summer 2025 competition! Jack recreated Devin Platts’ concept for the “Jörmungandr Plushie” SMITE skin, taking the 2D splash art into 3D. Built using @autodesk Maya, @substance3dart Painter, @foundryteam Nuke, and @adobe After Effects, the piece gave Jack the chance to experiment with fabric texturing, V-Ray fur, and subsurface scattering to achieve soft, fuzzy materials. Most digital design looks fake because it’s trying to simulate texture instead of understanding it. Texturing isn’t about adding filters. It’s about making the digital feel physical — and that requires real-world reference or it’ll always look synthetic. Look at this overprint design. Get close. Notice the misaligned ink layers, the grainy prints, the super limited color palette. Those imperfections aren’t mistakes — they’re the character. They all come from a Risograph printer running separate color passes, one ink at a time, building up that signature overprinted look. Most designers fake this with Photoshop overlays. It never looks right because the imperfections aren’t structurally accurate. Here’s the cheat code: Drop any image into Nano Banana, tell it you want a Riso conversion — and it rebuilds your design with real Risograph character. One prompt. Authentic texture structure. Then ask Nano Banana to split your design into separate ink layers if you want to animate it manually in After Effects. Or let the AI handle the whole animation process too. A full Risograph animation pipeline in one click. No printing press required. This is how you get texture that feels real instead of simulated.
