The Who was famous for ending their concerts by smashing their instruments, but during a 1967 performance on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”, they took destruction to the next level.
Drummer Keith Moon requested that his drum kit be loaded with explosives to make it “pop” at the end. Unbeknownst to him, someone added much more than planned.
When the drum set exploded, the blast was so loud that guitarist Pete Townshend temporarily lost hearing in one ear, and Moon suffered burns.
This chaotic scene on U.S. television cemented The Who’s reputation as a wild and radical band.
