This is part two of a two-parter on how the Hey Arnold episode 'Helga on the Couch' helped mainstream mental health awareness and break taboos. In this second reel we see the relationship between Helga and Dr. Bliss overcome a rocky start through shared vulnerability and openness. Not everyone gets a therapist like Dr. Bliss and I know a lot of people who have been put off seeking professional help for mental health issues because of bad experiences with a therapist. However, thanks to shows like these and improvements in holistic approaches to mental health communication, the number of good therapists out there is steadily increasing. No time in history has been better than now to seek out empathetic mental health professionals. Here is some empirical research on the importance of rapport in a clinical setting: Recent research has suggested that rapport may consist of two central elements. One aspect of rapport is trait-like , a result of the client's “general ability to form satisfactory relationships with others, their internal representations of self and others, and expectations from interpersonal relationships.” In other words, clients who are good at relationships in general can both create a good therapeutic relationship and benefit more from therapy. This trait-like aspect of rapport has been traditionally measured by comparing outcomes between low- and high-rapport clients. Recent methodological developments, however, have allowed for measuring within-patient variability in rapport during therapy. These studies reveal a state-like component of rapport, referring to “changes in alliance during treatment (e.g., time-specific strengthening of the alliance) that can predict changes in outcome.” In other words, improved rapport during therapy may constitute “an active ingredient sufficient in itself to bring about therapeutic change.” - Noam Shpancer, How Therapy Works: The Role of Real Rapport (2020), for Psychology Today.

In this episode of What’s Next, I speak with Julia Samuel MBE, psychotherapist, author of Grief Works: Life, Death and Surviving and the host of the brilliant podcast, Therapy Works. For the last 30 years, Julia has been helping the bereaved and making sense of their loss as they grieve the person they love. As someone living with Stage 4 Triple Negative Breast Cancer, I open up about mourning my own life whilst living, my desire to leave a positive legacy for my daughter and how to talk to friends and family so there are no regrets, unresolved issues or unanswered questions. Together, we discuss how to have small tender conversations that don’t feel overwhelming and how to deal with the sense of urgency that comes with knowing theres limited time left. In essence, this episode explores my deepest fears about dying and how therapy has helped me find peace with what I am facing. Let’s talk about it👇 Many of us have a tendency to be quite critical of ourselves without realizing it. It’s like having a constant commentary in our heads that focuses on our faults and shortcomings. This can lead to feelings of low self-worth and confidence. Now, think about how you talk to your friends. You probably offer them kindness, support, and encouragement, right? But when it comes to ourselves, it’s often a different story. We’re much harsher and less forgiving. The thing is, this negative self-talk can really impact our well-being. It reinforces negative beliefs about ourselves that hold us back from reaching our full potential. But the good news is, we can change it. By noticing and changing these thoughts, we can teach ourselves to be kinder. You deserve to treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you offer to others. So many of us think healing means doing it alone. But sometimes, strength comes from simply knowing someone else has felt this, sat with it, struggled through it… and still made it to the other side. Today a client said “Just knowing someone else has been through something similar… and found their way through… gives me strength.” And honestly, that one line? It stayed with me. That’s why I’m starting this. Not as a therapist. Not as content. Just as a human who’s witnessed how quiet and powerful healing can be. 🕊️ Real moments. Real people. Real healing. I work with a lot of children lately and when discussing their bodies response to triggers, these are some of what they say it feels like when they are freeze response.   In Why Therapy Works, author Louis Cozolino shares  Experientially, children are snapped from a mode of exploration to a startled freeze .. As a result, the child stops, looks downward, hangs his head and rounds his shoulders.… It is nature’s way of expressing what an adult might articulate by saying, ‘Please don’t hurt me’ or ‘Okay, you’re the boss.’”  guess what causes a freeze response in a child and why parents use it? Yelling and screaming*** The yell causes an instantaneous putting-on-the-brakes reaction Have you observed how your children freeze when you shout out an alarm because something they are about to do is dangerous? The problem with yelling is it sends a message to the child that they are unsafe and they immobolise, stop. To help support a child in a freeze response. To start, you can reflect how they are feeling using emotion words (ex: you seem worried). This helps them feel understood and promotes their sense of safety so that their body can begin to calm down. Once you feel that they are able to hear the words you are saying you can redirect them to something that might help calm their body down, such as deep breathing, getting a drink of water, or giving them soft safe touch (a massage with their permission). Exactly what will work for your child is unique to them.  The key is to send a message you are safe with me. Isnt that better that shaming them or putting them down? They are not being lazy. They have shut down. We can foster connection with our children by supporting their nervous systems, emotion coaching, and helping them build coping skills. We can use those difficult moments as teaching opportunities.    I teach emotional coaching and how we psychological experience emotions and so much more to support your child  in my powerful  course The Thriving Motherhood self paced course with ten modules.
