For those of us who can’t quit our job to travel …there are other ways to travel the world more often!!! I just got back from IMM in New York City, a yearly media event, where I met dozens of people who work in the travel industry — — and many of them get to travel the world as a part of their job, OR as a perk of working remotely! I know it’s not realistic for everyone to quit our full time jobs and travel or become travel creators (myself included! this page is my side hustle!)… BUT that doesn’t mean traveling a lot isn’t possible. I thought it would be fun to share some of the ‘behind the scenes’ of work I do/have done for my full time job(s). These jobs are the reason why I’ve been able to afford more travel…and how I’ve learned all my smart travel tips! How to get started as a travel writer? 🖋️ So many people are searching for a way to earn money online. Travel writing was my key to being able to continue travelling whilst earning money at the same time. 💰 But starting can be daunting, overwhelming and you’re not quite sure where to start. So here are some tips to get you started: 💻 Make sure you have a great example of your work! Even if you’ve never actually had your work published, having an example of a travel guide or article is a great way to showcase your writing. 🌍 Do some research. Look online at what travel companies you’d like to work for. See if they have a blog section and then follow the next tip. 🔗 If you can’t find a contact for the person in charge of the blog, do some stalking on LinkedIn. This is how I got my last writing job. Don’t be afraid to send them a message. ✍️ Write an introduction that gets to the point, tells them exactly what you want and what you have to offer. The messages I sent were very informal and short, but it worked. Make sure to include your example piece. 💡 You can also use websites like Fiverr and Upwork to advertise your travel writing services. To get your first gig, try to price lower than most other people so you increase your chances of getting to job. You can increase your prices once you’ve got a bit of experience. Take it from me: 🇵🇭 I’m a solo female traveler from a low income country 🏡 My family did not support my dream to travel full-time 💰 I pulled out all my savings & started traveling with ONLY $700 💸 I kept traveling while earning $3 per hour as a content writer. Companies refused to pay me more as a fresh graduate from a developing country. 💰 My average daily spend is $7-10 per day And… 🌎 I’m currently starting Expedition Now or Never, a solo overland journey across the world in the most adventurous ways, with ONLY $300. Because I refuse to wait until I’m old, until I’ve saved enough money to see the world. By then, it might be too late. Stop believing travel is only for the rich or that you can only travel when you’ve saved up. Not everyone comes from a country with high paying jobs. Not everyone has a government that takes care of its people. Not everyone has parents who support their adventures. Even with so little, you can make your dreams come true! And if I can do it, you can too! 💪🏽 Here are some low budget travel tips: 1️⃣ Stay with locals through @couchsurfing One of the best apps for budget travelers! It allows you to stay for FREE in the homes of locals. Through it, I’ve learned so much about different cultures & made so many beautiful connections across the globe. 2️⃣ See public transport as an adventure Instead of taking a flight or sightseeing tour, take the bus, train, or ferry. It’s cheaper & gives you an atmospheric way to see the country. Or better yet… hitchhike 😉👍🏽 3️⃣ Volunteer in exchange for FREE accommodation, meals & more! You can stay for weeks or months FOR FREE in exchange for your time & skills. You can volunteer for hostels, schools & even local NGOs. Santorini sunsets, Bali beaches, Moroccan medinas… It’s all something to show off to friends, family, and strangers on the internet. We count countries, proclaim the latest ‘hidden gem,’ and line up to take posed selfies at the same viewpoints as everybody else to slap on our respective grids. But what, dear traveler, did you actually learn? Spoiler ALERT 🚨 We pulled it off. How? 👇 We used to work 9–5s. But almost 3 years ago now, we made the leap. We quit our stable government jobs and became full-time travelers. No backup plan. Just a love for travel and a willingness to figure it out as we went. People thought we were a little bit crazy (maybe we were). But deep down, we knew we’d regret not trying. The biggest question we got—and still get? ❓HOW DO YOU DO IT❓ Well, there are two main challenges to traveling full-time for most: mental and financial. Mentally, it’s the fear of giving up stability. Of taking a path that’s not “normal.” And financially, it’s the pressure of funding a lifestyle that doesn’t come with a guaranteed paycheck or employer safety net 💰 We felt both. Hard. But we figured… if we could find a way to earn remotely, we’d at least give ourselves a shot. We started out as content writers, finding freelance work on platforms like UpWork. Eventually, we found our niche in SEO marketing and strategy. We now run our own business together—and we easily earn double what we used to in our traditional jobs. And that, in itself, gave ourselves the stability we needed to continue living the way we do for the past couple of years ✈️ We’ve built a life that lets us travel full-time and explore new countries at our own pace. It’s chaotic. It’s humbling. And it’s one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. 👉 Have more questions about how we made it work?
