MITryouts are here! If you’re feeling nervous, here are 10 mental shifts that will help you show up with confidence and stand out:
1️⃣ Control the controllables – Your effort, attitude, and energy matter more than perfection.
2️⃣ Reset after mistakes – Use a deep breath and simple reset phrase: “Next ball.”
3️⃣ Visualize success – Take 2–3 minutes a day to see yourself executing well and performing with confidence on the court.
4️⃣ Bring the intangibles – Be vocal, encouraging, and a great teammate. Coaches notice these things!
5️⃣ Prepare your body – Fuel, hydrate, sleep, and warm up like it’s game day.
6️⃣ Stop comparing, start competing – Focus on your growth and performance, not someone else’s.
7️⃣ Confidence = preparation – Trust the work you’ve put in. You’re ready!
8️⃣ Nerves mean you care – You’re not weak—you’re ready. Use the energy!
9️⃣ Play with purpose, not pressure – Bring leadership, grit, and focus.
🔟 Detach from outcome, attach to effort – Show up. Compete. Let the rest go.

You have to realize it’s not just about showing off your skills, it’s about showing coaches who you are as a player and as a teammate.
Here’s how to separate yourself:
✅ Bring consistent energy. Hustle on every rep, every drill, every shift. Coaches notice effort just as much as talent.
✅ Show confidence. Don’t hide. Get involved in the play, make decisions quickly, and don’t let mistakes rattle you.
✅ Have a great attitude. Be coachable. Listen. Nod. Compete hard but stay positive. That body language speaks louder than your stat line.
✅ Support others. Talk on the ice, encourage teammates, create chemistry. Coaches love players who make the people around them better.
✅ Control what you can control. You can’t control the cuts or the depth chart. But you can control your compete level, your mindset, and the way you carry yourself.
At the end of the day, your mental game is what allows your physical skills to shine.
