NASA's TESS satellite recorded 28 hours of footage showing interstellar object 3I/ATLAS as it receded from the Sun between January 15 and 19, 2026. The video shows the visitor as a bright glowing dot with an unusual anti-tail pointing back toward the Sun, moving through a crowded field of background stars. TESS, designed to search for exoplanets by monitoring distant stars, coincidentally captured 3I/ATLAS in its wide field of view as early as May 2025, nearly two months before astronomers officially discovered the object. Researchers later identified the interstellar visitor by stacking multiple early images together. The footage provides extended observation of only the third confirmed interstellar object passing through our solar system. Earlier interstellar visitors 'Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov generated intense scientific debate about their origins and composition, with some researchers proposing unconventional explanations for their anomalous behaviors. The anti-tail feature, where material appears to point toward rather than away from the Sun, represents an unusual characteristic that may offer clues about the object's composition and interaction with solar radiation. One step closer to space🚀💫 The next-generation weather satellite MetOp-SG-B1 has successfully completed its solar array deployment test. This was one of the last key milestones to ensure MetOp-SG-B1 is ready for its weather forecasting mission, with a launch set for the second half of the year. The 24 m² solar arrays will power the satellite so it can complete 14 Earth orbits per day. Behind the weather that you check on your phones everyday are satellites like the MetOp series (@eumetsatmedia and @esa_earth Meteorological Operational mission). With its five cutting-edge instruments, MetOp-SG-B1 will complement the data provided by its sister MetOp-SG A1, in orbit since August 2025. The MetOp-SG-B1 microwave and radar instruments will observe the Earth and provide crucial data to help both climatologists and meteorologists to be more precise in weather forecasting like temperature, humidity, as well as wind speed and direction.🌀 You'll have no excuse left if you forget your umbrella!☔

COSMO-SkyMed continues to strengthen Italy’s role in Earth observation. 🌍 With the successful launch of the third Second Generation satellite (CSG-FM3) on January 3, 2026, the COSMO-SkyMed constellation takes another step forward, enhancing its SAR radar capabilities for environmental, security, and emergency management applications. The new satellite introduces a redesigned radar antenna capable of acquiring multiple images simultaneously, increasing speed, coverage, and level of detail.
The constellation now has four operational satellites (two first-generation and two second-generation), with completion of the system expected in the coming years. Promoted by the Italian Space Agency and the Ministry of Defense, the program involves the excellence of the national industry and consolidates Italy’s leadership in Earth radar observation. 👉 Aviotec is proud to contribute to the mission supplying key sub-assembly of thermal control hardware, a key element in ensuring the stability, reliability, and operational performance of the satellite throughout all phases of the mission.
