The Jamek Mosque is serendipitously positioned at the point where two rivers meet, and where the city itself was born - the confluence of the muddy rivers Klang and Gombak. It is this geographical feature from which the city draws its name ('kuala' being 'confluence' or 'estuary' in Malay, and 'lumpur' meaning 'mud'). Raised upon an ancient Malay burial ground, its Moorish domes and arched colonnades were again the brainchild of the ubiquitous Mr. Hubback. The Sultan of Selangor himself consecrated its foundation in 1908 and opened it with solemn ceremony a year later. It was then the town's largest mosque and served as the state mosque until the National Mosque (Masjid Negara) was opened in 1965. Though now completely surrounded by a tumult of motor vehicles, elevated rail tracks and soaring glass towers, the mosque still retains an air of hallowed tranquillity - a sanctuary amid the din of urban life, its leafy palms and the murmuring river presenting an oasis of cool calm that reminds us that this is a city with a soul and its own unique spirituality. This video is part of a virtual walking tour through 14 historic sites in colonial Kuala Lumpur, using modern footage alongside historic photographs, postcards, and maps to explore places where the city’s story was shaped - many of which still stand around us today. The full video of the tour can be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKtCxMYt-xc The route taken in this virtual walk is based on a tour by Legacy Walks Enterprise, which offers a boutique historical and heritage walking tour of colonial Kuala Lumpur. This is a personal, immersive, and intimate experience rooted in careful historical research, little-known local anecdotes, and a storyteller’s charm, all within a convenient half-day walking distance. Jamek Mosque, officially Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers and may be accessed via Jalan Tun Perak. The mosque was designed by British architect and soldier Arthur Benison Hubback, and built in 1909. It was the principal mosque of Kuala Lumpur until the construction of the national mosque Masjid Negara in 1965. The name “Jamek” is the Malay equivalent of the Arabic word jāmiʿ (جامع) meaning a place where people congregate to worship. It is also referred to as “Friday Mosque” by the locals.
