HYWhy Your Water Softener Isn’t Fixing Salty Water
White stains on tiles, rough water on skin, corroded taps, and damaged appliances often push homeowners to install a water softener. Many believe it is the ultimate solution for all water impurities.
That belief is entirely wrong.
A water softener removes only calcium and magnesium, which are responsible for hardness. It does not remove other salts, such as sulphates and chlorides, which are commonly found in borewell water, especially in high-TDS areas.
Once you test your water in a lab, the truth becomes clear. If your TDS is above 2000 ppm, or if hardness levels are very high, a water softener will simply not work. Even technically, softeners are effective only when calcium and magnesium hardness is below 600 ppm.
This is why many people feel cheated after installing a softener. The real problem, salinity, remains unchanged. The water still tastes salty, still damages plumbing, and still causes long-term health and maintenance issues.
The biggest mistake? Installing a water softener without water testing or professional consultation.
Most people who approach us for advice are already using a softener, and we usually recommend replacing it with a whole-house RO plant, which actually removes dissolved salts and reduces TDS.
