In the United States, tornadoes can happen in every state, but they are most frequent in the central part of the country where specific weather conditions come together to produce powerful storms. The area with the highest number of tornadoes each year is a region commonly known as “Tornado Alley,” which stretches from northern Texas through Oklahoma, Kansas and into Nebraska. This region sees the most tornado activity because warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico often collides with cool, dry air from the Rockies and the Plains, creating powerful thunderstorms that can spawn tornadoes.
Within Tornado Alley, Texas typically has the most tornadoes of any state, followed by Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Other states such as Mississippi, Alabama, Illinois, Iowa and Florida also report many tornadoes each year, especially during the spring months.
While tornadoes are most common in the central United States, severe twisters can also occur in parts of the Southeast and the Midwest, and the overall tornado “hot spots” shift somewhat from year to year depending on weather patterns.
