PAWhat do you say when a white family member denies having white privilege?
There are some common reasons white people sometimes deny it, like:
👉🏽 They’re afraid that acknowledging it would mean that they’re racist, or they’re upset that they think someone’s accusing them of being racist. (In fact, they’re not the same at all. Racism is a mindset and behavior that people choose, and can change. No one chooses whether or not they have white privilege.)
👉🏽 They don’t want to feel like they’re responsible for other people’s hardships when they, personally, didn’t create the problem.
👉🏽 They worry that having privilege makes their accomplishments seem “less than” (as in, “I had to work hard for everything I have, too”).
👉🏽 They don’t understand what white privilege means.
Of course like we said, no one who has white privilege ASKED for it — white people today aren’t the ones who colonized North America, who stole land and life from Indigenous Nations, who enslaved Black people for hundreds of years, or who subsequently continued electing, promoting, and naming things after white people so that “white” became the default in our society that had all the power.
But here we are — and we only perpetuate those harms if we don’t acknowledge that history and the fact that it still impacts us today.
Here's a way to address it calmly and clearly, while helping them understand the concept of privilege and systemic advantages. 🤝🌍

JAIt’s so frustrating to constantly be demeaned to simply the way I look, and my cultural heritage.
White supremacy has blindly convinced people that Eurocentric ideals are the foundation of western society without ever acknowledging the colonial history.
White Americans have been brainwashed into believing that they are the backbone of this country, while conveniently disregarding the brutal history and dismantling of minority groups.
When I make videos, voicing my opinion, I have to be cognizant of my cultural heritage and simply the way I look in order to be taken seriously. White privilege is never having to worry about such things

SOHello dear ones. This is Shannon posting, Sonya’s content director. I wanted to reshare Sonya’s video “Whiteness Is a Death Cult White Folks NEED to Get Out Of”, which she originally posted November 20, 2020. Shoutout to Nikki Blak (@nikkiblak) for her discussion of whiteness as a death cult, which inspired Sonya. Almost five years later, we can see what has come to pass and how to respond in the present such that our collective future may be different.
This message — near and dear to me as someone with white privilege and colonizer ancestors from Western Europe — is aimed at white folks looking to grapple with the high stakes of uninterrogated whiteness (as violence, as power-over, as illusory superiority rooted in deep and unsustainable nihilism, and ultimately as self-destruction). Sonya’s video identifies these problems and begins to offer a path forward for white folks looking to divest from whiteness.
Sonya’s friend Bomani Armah (@bomani_armah)’s recent video “Do Not Let Your Friends Be White” further illuminates a path forward and is philosophically in conversation with Sonya’s video, which is why I added it to the end of her video in this post. Bomani’s message is equally impactful for me as I continue my journey of excavation and reconnection with my primarily English, Scottish, Irish, and German ancestors.
By putting these videos into conversation with each other, I aim to further illustrate this truth: no amount of collective gaslighting can alter how corrosive and self-destructive the project of whiteness is. The more its agents lash out, the more that white supremacist delusion is revealed as the cruel farce it is.
Fellow white folks, we have a choice: we can follow the pied piper of whiteness into the collapsing death cult it has become, or we can opt for survival, solidarity, and cultivating resilience in this crumbling empire. Choose the latter and let’s build the new world together 🌿

American institutions and media are covering for and aiding Israel’s use of starvation in Gaza as a tool of genocide. All of this oppression is connected. Columbia sicced riot police on its students. Columbia uses tuition and endowment to invest in the weapons industry. Columbia is the largest land owner in all of New York City, dispossessing Black and brown Harlem residents of their culture and neighborhood. Palestine has lifted the veil on academia’s complicity in war crimes while it profits off of ethnic cleansing. I think we need to use our voices exactly in this way. Sit down, CLAIRE.
