JAI never tire of spying on them from the air.
Little Pisoy with the skinny tail doesn’t have mange. I shared the footage with a wolf biologist who suggested that this was a fairly common occurrence in first-year wolves—their bodies aren’t quite regulated yet. So they can start changing from their winter to summer coats earlier than the rest of the pack.
If you’re wondering what they’re sniffing at, I’d run over some moose scat with my snowmobile earlier that day.

Why are these wolves sleeping??? Two possible reasons…
I came across the pack back in these snowdrifts about a km from a fresh moosekill. You can see Maniway, the mom, looking around (left) and her mate Mestakaya (top) along with Cipay (bottom) and Miton (right), two juveniles. This was taken in March a week after Maniway bred. Prior to that, Mestakaya and Maniway would sleep either back-to-back or with one of their heads resting across the back of the other. They were almost always touching. After breeding they were a bit more relaxed.

But back to the question of sleeping. Wolves sleep a lot, it’s nothing for them to sleep 12 hours straight after a big feed. But it’s also possible another factor is at play. The sun was warm that day; when I got off my snowmachine and tried to hike I felt like I was wading through wet concrete; I couldn’t go very far before I’d posthole up to my hips.

It’s very possible the wolves had decided after their one short walk from the kill that the snow was too soft and it would be better to stretch out and sunbathe until night temperatures were able to freeze up a nice, strong crust on top of the snow making travel a whole lot easier.

Wolves are among the most efficient snow travelers in the animal kingdom. When I track them I’m constantly seeing how they use our packed snowmobile trails, wind-packed drifts and windblown ice to full advantage. Wolves are smart that way 🙃

WOHappy 21st Birthday to the Queen of the Pack, Cree! 🎂
Twenty-one years. Isn’t that incredible? 🐾
Cree's journey to W.O.L.F. was anything but easy. Found roaming near a Native American reservation in New Mexico, she was captured and held while DNA testing determined her fate. Had the results come back differently, she would have been euthanized. Thankfully, she was classified as a Northwestern wolf cross and came to us in 2013. What we thought was a two-year-old girl turned out to be closer to eight, with worn teeth and signs of a very hard life behind her.
Today, she continues to thrive at the Sanctaury alongside Kovu, the two of them ruling their habitat from the highest rock outcroppings, napping in self-dug dens, and keeping the magpies very much on their toes.
At 21, she is still active, alert, playful, and absolutely remarkable. She is living proof of what love, safety, and sanctuary can do. 💛
