In truth, a single worker bee produces only about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in her entire 6-week life. From no dig gardening to embracing plants with distinct textures and scents, there are tons of ways blind and partially sighted people can get green fingered this summer. Transcript: Gardening hacks for blind and partially sighted people. There's all sorts of things you can grow. Think about things you like. Do you like really bold, colourful plants? Reds, yellows, oranges - they tend to be the plants and the flowers that we see the best. So choose plants that flower at different times of the year, give you colour at different times of the year. And also you can use different textured plants, as boundaries. So you know, as you're walking round the garden when you get to this plant, this is the point where I turn or this is where the vegetable patch starts or whatever. Things like grasses or bamboos provide sound in the garden as a wind blows through them. Maybe have a pond with some moving water that can add more interest. Brings in the wildlife, brings in the birds into the garden as well. For some people they enjoy having scented plants in the garden. When you touch herbs they release lovely smells. You might want to consider what's called the no dig technique. So each autumn covering the bed with some cardboard and then mulching it with compost or garden compost and let the worms take care of it for you over the winter to keep the weeds down. And then the other thing is to think about your tools. Perhaps mark the handles with bright coloured tape to make them easier for you to locate when you're working in the garden. You might want to consider buying plug plants from a garden centre rather than sowing some very fine and fiddly seeds. I think at the moment, whatever you decide to do, just don't forget to spend some time outside. Enjoy the fresh air, the sun, the rain or the wind in your face. It's just wonderful to be outside in nature. It gives us so much benefits to our mental health.]

Danie White started My Sistas Keeper, a collective of Black beekeepers in Cleveland's Central neighborhood. She recently helped her friend, Lexxus Davis, with a hive drop to acclimate bees to a new hive in Davis’ garden. White learned techniques about beekeeping through the East 39th Street Community Garden. There, she found a mentor who taught her how to build beehives, care for bees and, most importantly, how bees can help sustain a garden. Now, she’s studying to become a master beekeeper. Ohio’s fluctuating weather makes it hard for beekeepers to winterize their hives. This year, White and Davis want to ensure their bees survive the winter and the hive remains healthy. White also wants to bring her community together through beekeeping. Through learning about bees, she discovered a new word: eusocial, which is the highest form of community known in nature. Eusocial creatures like honeybees rely on one another for nearly everything. “They literally could not survive without one another,” White said. “They make choices for the hive together, and that's what makes a beehive so powerful. It's not just the queen, it's not just the drone, it's not just the worker bee. Ultimately, they work together.” White wants to make the Central neighborhood more eusocial, like the bees. She wants to create a network of beekeepers, farmers, gardeners and neighbors to help her community flourish.
