[Global Public Opinion] Public Attitudes on Gender Equality Largely Unchanged, but Generational Divide Widens An Ipsos survey released for International Women’s Day 2026 finds global attitudes toward gender equality largely unchanged, even as gender and generational divides widen. Between December 2025 and January 2026, more than 23,000 adults in 29 countries were surveyed. Across the 29-country average, 52% say things have gone far enough when it comes to giving women equal rights with men—58% of men agree versus 47% of women. Agreement is highest in Thailand (81%) and lowest in Japan (28%). At the same time, 60% agree that things would work better if more women held leadership positions in government and business (men 53%, women 68%). Meanwhile, 46% say men are being expected to do too much to support equality, a view held by 54% of men and 38% of women. Views on traditional gender roles remain divided. While 77% support equal sharing of important household decisions, and around three-quarters endorse shared responsibility for childcare and housework, these figures decline when respondents consider societal norms. For example, only 62% believe decision-making is shared in practice, while 21% say it is primarily the responsibility of men. Generational differences are also evident. Compared with Baby Boomers, Gen X and Millennials, Gen Z men [Note] are more likely to hold traditional views on gender roles: 31% agree a wife should always obey her husband, 43% believe young men should strive to be physically tough even if not naturally strong, and 57% believe efforts to promote gender equality have gone too far and now discriminate against men. ================= Global Public Opinion Series: We use artificial intelligence (AI) to compile key public opinion survey results released around the world, then verify them manually and present them as column articles. In 2005, most European parliaments still looked very similar: overwhelmingly male. In many countries, women held only about 25–30% of seats. A few Nordic countries stood out, but gender balance in politics was still the exception rather than the rule. Twenty years later, the map has changed. Across Europe, several countries are now approaching 40–50% women in parliament. Some countries that were already leaders — like Finland, Sweden, and Denmark — have stayed near the top. But the biggest shifts happened elsewhere. Countries such as Spain, Belgium, Portugal, and Latvia have seen some of the largest increases since 2005, with women’s representation rising by more than 20 percentage points in some cases. But this trend raises an interesting question about political representation. Should national institutions aim for perfect gender balance — roughly 50/50 — as a benchmark of equality? Or is some level of imbalance perfectly normal in democratic systems, since representation ultimately reflects voter preferences, party structures, and candidate pools? Across Europe today, parliaments fall along a wide spectrum — from roughly one-third women to nearly equal representation. The trend toward greater balance is clear. But whether perfect parity should be the goal is still debated. What do you think: Should democracies aim for 50/50 representation? 📊 Data: Eurostat — Seats held by women in national parliaments; UK Parliament, House of Commons, Pew Research Center; U.S. House, IPU Parline database (Canada, House of Commons) 👉 Like, 🔗 share, and ▶️ follow for more career tips and job advice! #women #career #womeninpolitics #usa #usalife #uk #canada #germany #sweden #finland #denmark #norway #Relocation
