DON’T do what I did👇🏻 Btw, hi, I’m Megan. I help writers outline and write stronger first drafts. Follow for daily strategies 💛 When I wrote my first novel, I was super excited about my idea (Like, “let me pull out my notebook RIGHT NOW” kind of excited) and I just started writing. I pumped out 50,000 words in 30 days of whatever scenes came to mind. It was SO much fun But then, I had to piece all those scenes together... bc they weren’t connecting at all. …So I wrote another 50,000 words and then another 50,000 when that didn’t work… I had an English degree and wrote my whole life. I figured I knew enough about stories from reading I figured if I “just kept writing,” the story would come together Now, nearly 10 years later, that story still isn’t done. Because it was never a story in the first place It was 3 different stories based on vibes and ideas Thank God I’ve learned a different way... If you want to write a story that connects and impacts people, you need more than exciting ideas You need a story that WORKS. And stories that work aren’t written in 30 days (as nice as that would be 😩) Follow @megan.maclaine for real strategies you can use to finally finish your novel 💛.

✨️A quiet reminder for the writer who is still showing up.✨️ Not every writing season feels inspired. Some days the words flow easily. ✒️ Other days you sit down unsure whether the story is even working. 😵‍💫 But progress in writing rarely looks dramatic from the inside. 📝It looks like opening the document again. ✍🏻Writing a paragraph. 📖Revising a scene. 🧙🏻Thinking about your characters while doing something else. 🚶‍♀️Small steps that don’t always feel like much in the moment. But those small steps are exactly how books get written. So if you’re still showing up to the page, even when the process feels uncertain, you’re already doing the most important part. Keep writing. And if this reminder found you on a day you needed it 👉🏻let me know in the comments: what are you working on right now? 🫶🏻Follow @writingitwells for grounded writing craft, creative encouragement, and sustainable momentum for writers.

Here’s what I learned from writing a novel draft in 23 days: 📝 Writing daily is the best way to keep my story at the front of my mind. 📝 Using a timer in Word sprints really works for me to get words on the page. 📝 I don’t have to have everything figured out, and it doesn’t have to be polished. 📝 The name of the game in a discovery draft like this is to just keep putting words down and not worrying about whether it’s good. (It’s not, yet - but it will be!) 📝 I think of a first draft like gathering raw material that I will polish and refine in later drafts. A few bonus tips I learned: 📝 Dictation is hands-down the fastest way for me to write. 📝 Setting a crazy hard goal deadline is exactly the motivation I need to get the first draft done. #writingprocess #firstdraftclub #authorsofinstagram #dictation #writingtip

If your story feels stuck… It’s not because you’re not trying hard enough. Most writers don’t struggle with writing. They struggle with what happens next. So the scenes don’t connect. The middle feels messy. And you keep second-guessing everything. Once you have a clear structure? Everything starts to click. This is exactly what I help writers do, go from scattered ideas to a complete first draft. If this sounds like you check the link in my bio 💛 #writingtipsandtricks #writingtip

A lot of beginner writers think the goal is to sound “like a writer.” It’s not. The goal is to make someone feel something, and that usually comes from the small, specific details, not the most impressive wording. Simple writing isn’t weak writing; it’s intentional. If you’re trying to write better stories, focus less on how it sounds… and more on what it does. 💜✍️ #writingtips #writebetterstories #creativewriting #amwriting #authoradvice
