What most parents don’t know about ABA therapy and aggressive kids with autism. When aggression leads to escape, redirection, or constant reinforcement, the behavior can grow instead of stop. Reinforcement alone doesn’t build mental stamina or frustration tolerance. If you’re a parent of an autistic child, you know how overwhelming dental visits can be. I still remember the last time Charlie went to the dentist a few years ago—he had to be put under general anesthesia and it broke my heart. For over a year, Charlie has been working hard in ABA therapy to tolerate dental exams, and we finally decided to take that huge step and bring him in person. To my surprise, it went better than I ever dreamed. I’m beyond proud of Charlie for his and progress. And I can’t thank his BCBA and entire team enough for the dedication and support they’ve shown him. They made this moment possible. When I think about where we were two years ago, when even haircuts were a battle, it’s nothing short of miraculous to see both Charlie and Jude now able to handle both haircuts and dental exams. It felt like an impossible dream not too long ago. To all the autism parents out there, I know how hard it is. But don’t lose hope—progress happens in the most unexpected and beautiful ways.

VOL 6: HOW DO YOU GET AN AUTISM DIAGNOSIS EVEN? “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”: I use to side-eye this saying cos I felt it was overused to justify mediocrity. But there are actually many times when you really just have to go with the best you can do, even if it’s imperfect. And that’s kind of the deal with Autism Screening, Evaluation, Assessment (whichever word they choose to use) for an Autism Diagnosis. #AutismVolumes But I think as a parent, I’ll rather do more than less. Around the time of my boys diagnosis I had two friends, with toddlers born same time as my boys, during the pandemic, going through the exact same thing I was. We all signed up for Early intervention and all received ABA therapy. Fast forward, eight months later, two of us have autism diagnosis and continued therapy and my other friend has had services reduced (no more ABA therapy) cos the children aren’t showing the delays they showed previously. Whether there were issues with evaluation or children just got past that phase- we may never know. But the Point is- it’s easier to reduce services than to not have them and then try to play catch-up. See this quote from the Journal of Pediatrics June 2021: “There is no question that we, with our current screening tools are imperfect at identifying many children with the heterogeneous Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)… Until we have more accurate and culturally appropriate methods, pediatricians and other providers of care to children must continue to rely on a variety of broadband developmental screening and autism-specific instruments, and do so at any early age when interventions can have the greatest impact.” Anyways- Always sharing cos I hope this helps the next person. #autismmom #autismawareness #autismacceptance #onthespectrum #neurodiversity #autismfamily #autismparent #autismspectrum #autismparents #blackfamily #autismeducation #autismlife #earlyintervention #childtherapy #specialneeds

Обучение и повышение квалификации сотрудников медико-социальных учреждений, соц. работников. Наметили совместные планы по подготовке специалистов ABA therapy прикладному анализу поведения, CST (Caregiver Skills Training), направленных на обучение родителей навыкам ухода за детьми с особыми потребностями. Обсудили возможность пилотного проекта для взрослых с ментальными нарушениями и мер по внедрению специальности поведенческого специалиста в государственный классификатор профессий. Если получится это все реализовать - это станет огромным вкладом, поддержкой специалистам, родителям и взрослым с аутизмом и другими ментальными особенностями. I am though, an expert when it comes to MY son and our families experience with Autism. I too, am an expert in wanting to help you, and whoever I can. Whenever I put a question box, I get asked this question, and daily, I get DMs with this question so it’s an important one to answer. I also just got off the phone to a girlfriend that gets asked the same thing.. If in doubt…. Further explore always.
