In the early hours of August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit and a small team illegally accessed the upper levels of the World Trade Center while the towers were still unfinished. They moved equipment through stairwells and freight elevators, worked in darkness, and anchored a steel cable between the two roofs more than 1,300 feet above the ground. The wire was tensioned by hand. There was no safety line. Any misstep meant open air to the streets below. Just after sunrise, Petit stepped onto the cable. Wind moved between the towers, and the wire shifted under his feet. He walked back and forth multiple times, knelt on the cable, lay down on his back, and stood again. Police officers appeared on both rooftops and attempted to signal him to stop, but he remained on the wire for roughly forty-five minutes, fully exposed above Manhattan. Witnesses on the ground reported seeing a figure suspended between the towers, motionless at times, then moving slowly across the gap. The cable oscillated with each step. Petit carried a balancing pole and adjusted constantly to wind and vibration. There was no mechanical backup. The only margin for error was his ability to correct himself in real time. When he finally stepped off the wire, Petit was arrested on the roof. The charge was criminal trespass. The equipment was removed, and the cable was taken down. No one was injured during the act, and no structural damage was reported.
