Here’s Why 2 Hours into Building Your Vocal Chain You’re Asking Yourself Where it All Went Wrong: You’ve just written the song that will make your haters pee their pants and you’ve laid down your vocals. You can hear the upstairs neighbors adlibbing vigorously in support. You text them to shut up so you can finally start MIXING. You usually start with EQ, but today you feel like the vocals need immediate distortion. Now the vocal sounds harsh so you EQ down the top end. But now it’s hard to hear every word clearly so you slam it through compression. The vocals are now a MESS and you ask yourself where it all went wrong. Your neighbors hear you screaming that you’re a fraud and ask if everything is ok king. YES, mixing is an art. But every artist knows you have to start with a foundation before you can start breaking the rules and putting the steps out of order. The reason you feel like you’re winging it every single time you mix vocals is because you don’t have a PROCESS, so I’m here to tell you about the C.R.I.S.P. method: C - Cut: Cut sibillances with a de-esser and use subtractive EQ R - Reduce: Gain reduction (as in compression) I - Iron Out: “Iron out” the vocal with multiband compression and dynamic EQ S - Sauce: “Sauce” it with saturation, distortion, and additive EQ P - Paint: “Paint” it with effects This is your new step-by-step process for addressing vocals instead of going around in circles and not knowing where to start.
