Such gorgeous sunny day again, it is a shame to be stack indoors, so I decided to prepare for my tonight’s Fascial Flow Pilates in the garden. We use different equipment in our classes, but one of my current favourites is weighted mobility balls (sometimes also called toning balls). Here are just a few benefits of using them: ✅improved balance and stability ✅increased muscle strength ✅they encourage functional movement and overall body mobility and flexibility ✅they help maintain elasticity of our tissues (if we want to stay youthful and mobile as we age, we need to work on it). The last two ✅✅ are the main reason why I decided to explore their use in our Fascial Flow Pilates classes. The ball exercises mimic real-life functional movements, such as twisting, throwing, and bending, improving the ability to perform daily tasks with ease and help our tissues to remain elastic. It is about training smarter, as true mobility and strength come when we use multi-planar movement. We need to move not just forward and backward, but also side to side, and rotationally. We need to train the whole body and minimise isolation training (sadly, far too common in traditional fitness). For example, our shoulders benefit from the movement of our trunk and legs, and vice versa. Better mobility is more than just what the joint is doing, it is the quality of our tissues and how we train it too. I love weighted mobility balls and love experimenting with them. If needed, you can either hold onto a sturdy chair or counter or practice in a corner. Be safe! 1️⃣ Heel-Toe Rockers: Shift your weight slowly from heels to toes. This gentle exercise improves balance and helps you feel more secure when moving. 2️⃣ Feet Together with Head Turns (more advanced if eyes closed): Stand tall with your feet close together and slowly turn your head left, then right. This keeps your vestibular system sharp, which is key to feeling steady. 3️⃣ Heel-Toe Stance: Place one foot directly in front of the other, as if standing on a tightrope. Practicing this strengthens your balance in tight spaces. 4️⃣ Multi-Directional Steps: Step forward, sideways and backward-just like walking in your home. This helps your body prepare to react confidently to any sudden movements or slips. 5️⃣ Single-Leg Stand: Stand on one leg. This builds strength in your ankles and hips, helping you stay active and mobile.
