__Google researchers just turned decades of news archives into flood prediction data using large language models.
The team trained LLMs to extract quantifiable details from qualitative news reports dating back to 1995. A single sentence like "floodwaters reached waist-high near the bridge" becomes structured data with depth, location, and timing. This method creates training datasets for regions where sensor data barely exists, particularly in developing nations prone to flash floods.
The approach transforms narrative journalism into machine-readable inputs, effectively crowdsourcing historical disaster observations. Google's system can now predict flash floods in areas lacking traditional monitoring infrastructure, potentially saving thousands of lives annually.
But news archives carry inherent biases. Remote villages or minor events often go unreported, creating significant gaps in the data. The LLM's accuracy also matters. Misinterpreting approximations like "waist-high" as precise measurements could skew predictions. If the model inherits these errors, the forecasts may prove unreliable in critical situations where communities depend on timely warnings.
This work signals a shift in how AI tackles data scarcity. Instead of waiting for sensors to generate structured data, Google is structuring the interpretations humans already recorded. The real test will be whether news-based forecasts can match the precision of sensor-driven systems. The bigger question is whether this method can scale beyond floods to other climate challenges.
