Can you guess which one? I have 4 daughters and one of them had an amputation surgery last year. She is adjusting so well to life with a prosthetic that she is practically indistinguishable from all the other kids. It’s been a week since I’ve been in rehab and 10 days since my below the knee amputation. I decided to go to rehab to make sure that when I got home, I was really in a position to be as independent as possible. Being 3 hours away from the doctors and prosthetist also made me decide to stay so that we could work through issues without having to drive back and forth. I have had issues with my ipop from the beginning. The shape of my leg and the volume changes of my leg post op have caused my ipop to be super loose and fall off. The prosthetists have recast my leg 4 times now. Over the last week, we’ve worked to try to really get me to a place where the ipop is effective and comfortable. I think we’re finally getting there! The biggest issue aside from the ipop has been phantom pain and sensation. After the surgery I had a lot of phantom sensation which just feels like maybe your foot is itching or you need to wiggle your toes. As time post op has moved forward, the issue now is phantom pain. It stops me in my tracks and wakes me up at night. It often feels like someone is running over my foot with a car, absolutely just excruciating. Other times it’s like my toes are cramped and twisted and I’m having a Charlie horse I just can’t get relief from. Over time the phantom pain will lessen. Right now, my nerves are so confused about why they have been cut and implanted into muscles they’ve never known before. I’m feeling confident that I’ll be able to get around at home and do the things I need to do to move forward with my life. In just over a month, it’ll already be time to start fitting me with my new permanent leg!

Yesterday I had an appointment that I was less than pleased with. Anytime I meet with a new Doctor or Fellow I need to retell my story and explain what I’ve been through, essentially reliving all of those experiences and reopening those wounds. Yesterday I spoke with a Fellow who was new to my case and I guess didn’t read far enough into my notes to know that in just over half a year I will have my foot amputated. I’ve been seeing a clinic to try to help manage my pain between now and my amputation. The reason for that is because if I can manage my pain before my surgery, the recovery and my ability to manage phantom limb syndrome after amputation will be more promising. I met with this Fellow at the pain clinic before meeting with my usual Doctor and after spending more time and energy than I would’ve liked explaining the pain I’ve been experiencing and the decision to amputate, he had the same question that many people have: Why wouldn’t you look into more pain management options instead of amputation if you want to continue working as an aerial circus artist? Well, one reason (and I think the most valid reason) is because I’ve spent the last nearly ten years exhausting all of the pain management options that were presented to me. Nearly a decade of trial and error after error of pain management is very tiring. While everyone else my age spent their early adulthood enjoying their youth, I’ve spent mine in hospitals. Having scans done, preparing for and recovering from numerous surgeries and procedures, spending days in bed because I’m in too much pain to walk or stand, crying quietly behind closed doors and quickly wiping my tears to pull myself together because I’m hyper aware of the fact that showing your pain makes other people uncomfortable. And I’m done. That’s enough now. I’m sick of being in pain, I just want to enjoy life. And I’m strong, I know that. So while I know it will be difficult, I am determined that I can figure out ways to make what I want to do work for me when I no longer have to pretend that I’m ok when I haven’t been for almost ten years. - #circus #aerialcircus #cancersurvivor #chronicpain #health
