SELet’s talk about the unwinding of the arm in the pitching delivery. This motion was coined the driveline phase by Driveline baseball and is instrumental in actually delivering the ball. How does this actually take place though?
I have recently been analogizing this to the graviton ride at carnivals. The cylindrical ride spins at a high speed and the floor drops out. Riders stay stuck to the wall because of the high RPMs and the centripetal force created.
Pitching, specifically the unwinding of the throwing arm, mirrors this same principle. The throwing arm doesn’t drive itself out and around — it’s carried by the body’s rotation. The torso and spine create the turn, while the tissues of the shoulder and pec provide the inward pull (centripetal force) that keeps the arm tethered to the body’s axis. From there, the arm gets flung out and around via a pseudo centrifugal force.
That’s why the arm is the passenger, not the engine. When the spine drives rotation and the lead leg block transfers energy, the arm spirals naturally. Trying to force or muscle it means you’re working against the very forces that make efficient throwing possible. The arm is dead, passive, and just along for the ride.
Bottom line:
- The spine drives the turn.
- The body supplies the inward pull.
- The arm rides the forces outward
Train the center. Trust the spiral 🌀
