JOBefore straight-line construction dominated academic drawing, there was disegno: the older traditional method.
Form was built through chained arc-like curves that create continuity, overlap, silhouette, and surface turns and edges. These constructions were historically organized on proportional grids—at least as far back as the Old Kingdom Egyptians—and grounded in models or templates studied and applied in the making of new work.
Though this method lies behind much of historical art, it is not taught today outside of New Masters Academy.
This classical nose plaster drawing demo is from my Two-Year Foundations class, where students learn these traditional constructions and apply disegno first through imitation, then from plaster casts, and later from the living model and from themselves.
