It's time to give the Anhingas a mention 🐉 Anhingas are a distinct bird you can see in the southeastern US, as well as Central & South America. They look like little dragons, spearfish their prey and make a raspy call. I love seeing Anhingas when I visit Florida. Meet the Anhinga, also known as the Snakebird! With its long neck and sharp beak, it’s a master hunter in water. It swims silently, spears fish with lightning speed, and flips them into the air to swallow whole. Found in freshwater lakes and rivers, this bird is a true underwater assassin!" #anhinga #anhingas #Wildlife #wildbird #bird #birds #reel #reels

Near-threatened and an uncommon visitor to Singapore - Anhingas or”snakebirds” are actually pretty cool! The Oriental Darter gets its nickname from the way its long neck rises from the water like a snake while it swims. Unlike many waterbirds, its feathers aren’t fully waterproof. So, you’ll often spot it perched with wings spread out to dry after a dive. In Singapore, these birds can sometimes be seen fishing at quarries, reservoirs or even at neighbourhood canals like this right here in Whampoa!

Captivating... This anhinga spends much of its day in the water where it can swim as it hunts for fish. And yes, they often do spear the fish to catch them! This one in particular is a female anhinga with its breeding colors. The brown feathers from the shoulders up is what helps to identify that its a female. Some people refer to the anhinga as the snakebird probably due to the way it moves its neck and the way you will see just the neck and head above water when it takes a breath from swimming. While these birds can often look awkward especially when they wiggle their head and neck around to watch out while drying their wings, they can also be quite captivating as well. I get to see these all the time, but I am not sure how far their range spreads so let me know how often you get to watch these anhingas!

⚠️Anhinga Eats Fish Whole⚠️ The American Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) belongs to the small family Anhingidae of 4 related darters… you read that right 🤯 What might seem like redundant alliteration, is actually the result of an incredibly unique bird whose build and structure is not shared by other species outside of its single genus “Anhinga” and very small 4-member family. As tribute to their uniqueness, they’ve been given many names, such as “water turkeys” after their fan-like tail feathers, “snakebirds” after their long necks that stick out of the water when swimming, and “darters” for their underwater swimming agility. Anhingas are often seen primarily, but not exclusively, in or near freshwater bodies of water. They lack waterproof feathers that help them submerge themselves when diving and spearing for fish with their beaks. This also means that they must dry their feathers before taking flight, which explains why we often always see them just before a body of water with their wings stretched wide. After a successful catch, they can stay in the water to swallow their prey (if size allows). However, in situations like the one above, fish that are too big and spiny can only be swallowed by sitting on a perch, beating it repeatedly, and orienting the fish in such a way that the spines don’t hurt them upon swallowing it. Anhinga’s are truly masters of their craft 🗡️🐟 Footage captured at CREW Bird Rookery Swamp 🪶 #crewtrust #floridabirds #anhingas #waterturkey

Both birds look almost the same and both dive underwater to hunt. This one appears to be an Anhinga from a quick spin of the Google machine … “Anhingas use their long, straight, pointed beak to spear their prey. Cormorants, on the other hand, use their hooked bills to grab their prey.” Fun stuff. #anhingas #anhingasofinstagram #cormorant #cormorants #cormorantsofinstagram #birdsofinstagram #birdstagram #birdsofinsta #blufftonsc #loveblufftonsc #blufftonstateofmind

Smooth moves. How smooth? Let's see what Cornell Labs says about Anhingas: "Usually forages alone, swimming slowly and stalking underwater in and around aquatic vegetation. Wings are often cocked open underwater, either to attract fish to the shadow or to counteract sinking. Captures prey by spearing with rapid thrust of partially opened bill. Usually stabs fish in their sides with both mandibles; uses upper mandible only sometimes on small fish. Side-spearing habit suggests that the usual hunting method is by stalking rather than pursuit; spearing may limit Anhingas to capture of relatively small, laterally compressed fish. Backward-pointing serrations on tips of both mandibles probably enhance holding of prey after capture. Sometimes eats small items underwater, but more often brings them to surface. Shakes prey vigorously off the bill, tosses it in the air, and catches and swallows it headfirst. Sometimes catches insects out of water." Nature rocks. Silver Springs State Park. This is what's called an Anhingas 😊 the picture at the end I actually took off Google . They are primarily in fresh or swamp waters and while swimming underwater they use their pointed beaks to spear small fish and other aquatic invertebrates . When I stopped filming he actually got a very tiny fish .. very tiny 🐟 and seemed to be very happy 😁 . #anhingas #birds #wildlife

These two #Anhingas came into care around the same time for emaciation and weakness due to having fabric around the beak, and after being housed together in an outdoor aviary they seemed to take quite a liking to each other! Our staff would often find them perched together enjoying the sunshine or eating their breakfast. We were thrilled to be able to release them both together this week! Shortly after the video ended, the other anhinga joined its friend across the pond in the same tree. It is such a treat to see two of our patients become bonded and we are hoping both will thrive back in the wild!
