LEThis year, the red Rowan tree bore exceptionally early and abundantly, which heralds the slow arrival of Autumn. Their beautiful, fresh, red fruits are just begging to be picked while they’re still there. The Rowan berries can be used for many health and beauty purposes, but also for its magical properties✨
Slavs believed that the rowan tree was dedicated to the god of thunder, and a tree planted near the house supposedly deflected lightnings! Our Slavic ancestors also believed that Rowan is a magical tree - the tree of life. It was used especially for protection, as the Slavs believed that the red color was a color of protection. A necklace made of Rowan berries, wore around the neck protected the person who’s wearing it, a garland made of berries hung in a window or on a door - protected the house.
In Polish homes, probably everyone had a tradition of making Rowan garlands out of the fresh gathered berries, as good way to spend time with the whole family.
Rowan was also considered the seat of good spirits, thus brooms made of Rowan twigs were used to sweep away evil spirits from the house. And also one of the most powerful magic wands are made from rowan wood! ✨
In the past, such garnalds were hung in villages on images of the Virgin Mary, on altars or on figurines carried during religious processions.
It was said that the good Lord God created mountain ash to decorate the world, to comfort hermits in the forests, so that they too would have something to smile at, or to feed wild birds in winter.
Rowan beads, woven into a harvest wreath, were supposed to guarantee a healthy and abundant grain harvest the following year. Some people are still convinced today that an abundance of rowan berries heralds good grain harvests, while if the rowan tree bears fruit too early, it is probably a sign of a harsh winter.
