Gujarat is known for its communities of artisans who for centuries are practising block printing using natural dyes. But do you know that air circulation or air ventilation plays a crucial role in block printing? If air circulation in a block is not correct, the print will be of a poor quality. So how do these wooden blocks of sagwan ensure air circulation? And how did traditional craftsmen (mostly unlettered) who made these blocks and meticulously carved prints on them, learn the physics behind block printing? Btw, a new block is soaked in mustard oil for a month before using it for printing! I visited a block printing workshop in Ahmedabad today evening and met Sajid bhai who runs Fakira Fab @fakira_fab16 . His workshop has 10,000 blocks and all catalogued digitally. Many blocks are almost 100 years old and still in use. Listen in to know more. Sajid bhai belongs to the traditional Chippa community, which is one of India’s most culturally rich artisan groups, known for its mastery in hand block printing. #artisans #crafts #blockprinting #traditionalcraft #gujarat #ahmedabad
