About 1 in 20 people have auditory processing disorder—meaning their ears hear just fine, but their brain’s like “nah, I missed that.” If you constantly say “what?” or need subtitles to survive, you’re not alone. Your brain might just be doing its best in a noisy world. 🎥 via tt/@courtneyadhd #auditoryprocessingdisorder #ADHD #neurodivergent #BrainHealth

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting sounds, even though hearing is normal.   In this reel, Low Fang Yin highlights key symptoms of APD. While these symptoms may resemble those of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), they are not the same. APD involves difficulty with listening, while ADHD is characterised by attention challenges. They can occur together.   If you suspect APD, consult an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis.   #NUHOtolaryngology #NUHENT #AuditoryProcessingDisorder #APD #APDAwarenessDay — Low Fang Yin is a Senior Speech Therapist from the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

Do you often find yourself saying “what?” or “huh?” 😅 Many people with ADHD also struggle with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) 🎧. ADHD makes it harder to focus and remember things, which can worsen auditory issues 🧠. Juggling ADHD symptoms can add to the difficulty of processing sounds 🤯. Since APD and ADHD often go hand in hand, it’s important to get a thorough evaluation and personalized help 👩‍⚕️. Some symptoms of APD may include: * Difficulty figuring out where a sound is coming from * Difficulty understanding spoken language in noisy backgrounds * Taking longer than typical to respond to when spoke to in conversation * Difficulty understanding and following rapid speech * Often asking “what?” or “huh?” when spoken to, or asking for the speaker to repeat themselves * Trouble paying attention and being easily distracted If you are looking for help and a supportive community join our small ADHD coaching group in August ☺️🩵💪 🦋 Class takes place on Tuesdays from 1 PM EST/ 7 PM CET ✨Optional weekly body doubling session on Thursdays from 10 AM EST/ 4 PM CET 🔗 Comment Group Coaching for more info 🚨 💜I Looking forward to meeting you soon! #adhd #adhdeducation #adhdexplained #ADHDInsights #ParentingConcerns #FocusOnBehaviors #AttentionStruggles #ChildWellbeing #ADHDRealities #adhdcommunity #scienceexplained #adhdforbeginners #coaching #adhdinwomen #neurodiversity #adhdcoach #adhdempowerment

🧠 APD has NOTHING to do with “just listening better.” Let’s set the record straight 👇 🔹 Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) isn’t about hearing loss — it’s about how the brain interprets what it hears. 🔹 People with APD can hear sounds clearly but struggle to make sense of them — especially in noisy or busy environments. 🔹 It can affect children AND adults, impacting communication, learning, focus, and everyday conversations. 🔹 With the right support and strategies, people with APD can absolutely thrive! 🎧 It’s not a “listening problem.” It’s a processing difference. #AuditoryProcessingDisorder #APDawareness #EducationalAudiology #Audiologist #AuditoryProcessing #HearingAndBrain #SLP #SchoolAudiologist #Neurodiversity #AdultAPD #APDsupport #BrainBasedLearning #ListenToLearn #AuditoryProcessingTesting

#understoodpartner Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects how the brain processes sound. People with APD can hear, but they struggle to understand and interpret the sounds correctly. Here are some common signs of APD ⬇️ 👂🏽Difficulty following conversations in noisy environments or group settings. 👂🏽Frequently asking for repetition or saying “what?” even though hearing is normal. 👂🏽Trouble understanding spoken instructions, especially multi-step directions. 👂🏽Misinterpreting similar-sounding words, leading to confusion. 👂🏽 Struggling to keep up with fast-paced conversations or overlapping speech. 👂🏽Difficulty distinguishing between sounds, such as “cat” and “cap.” 👂🏽Poor listening skills or appearing inattentive, especially in noisy settings. 👂🏽Challenges with reading, writing, and spelling, often tied to phonetic confusion. 👂🏽Delayed response to verbal questions, as more time is needed to process the information. 👂🏽Inconsistent performance in tasks that involve listening or auditory comprehension. One of my co-occurring disabilities is ✨APD✨ or auditory processing disorder! My first job was working as a receptionist actually…and to no one’s surprise, I sucked at it and only lasted a month! I actually could not even get someone’s name over a phone call and I brushed this off for years thinking everyone else struggled with this too. I started using captions on everything, I stopped taking calls, I became the friend perpetually known for saying “huh”, and it wasn’t until I got my hearing checked a few years ago that I found out I had APD! And while there isn’t too much I can about it besides the accomodations I was already making, it has been super affirming being able to name and understand my auditory issues 💚 And a reminder as always that this video is certainly not diagnostic criteria (nor will any video on social media be) but if you relate to all of this and more traits, it might be worth talking to your doctor about! #auditoryprocessing #auditoryprocessingdisorder #apd #subtitles #captions #disabled #autisticadults #latediagnosedautistic #autistic #disability #disabilitypridemonth #disabilitypride

💥 What looks like a “focus problem” is often the sensory reality of Autistic Auditory Filtering. Struggling to process sound in a busy room is frequently dismissed as simply “spacing out” or a lack of attention. ❤️‍🩹 Unlike ADHD, this isn’t about a wandering mind—it’s an unfiltered nervous system that can’t distinguish a conversation from the hum of a refrigerator. 1️⃣ “Selective Hearing” in Crowds 👉 Not just being “rude”—it’s an inability to isolate one voice. While ADHD might find background noise “interesting,” an Autistic brain hears every sound at the same volume. 2️⃣ Extreme Irritability in Loud Places 👉 Not just a “short fuse”—it’s sensory overload. When the brain can’t filter competing sounds, the nervous system enters “fight or flight,” causing shutdowns often mistaken for ADHD outbursts. 3️⃣ Need for Captions on TV 👉 Not just “lack of focus”—it’s a processing delay. Even with perfect hearing, the brain struggles to decode spoken language fast. Captions provide the visual anchor needed to bridge that gap. 4️⃣ Asking “What?” then Immediately Answering 👉 Not just “not listening”—it’s “echoic memory.” The brain needs extra seconds to turn sound into meaning. By the time they ask “What?”, the audio has finally “loaded.” 5️⃣ Exhaustion After Socializing 👉 Not just “social burnout”—it’s listening fatigue. Manually filtering out the hum of lights and traffic just to hear a friend is physically and mentally draining. 6️⃣ Missing Multi-Step Instructions 👉 Not just “forgetfulness”—the brain’s “buffer” overflows. If the first instruction is still being filtered, the subsequent ones are never actually “recorded.” ❤️‍🩹 My Final Thought: Auditory filtering isn’t a hearing problem; it’s a processing reality. Recognizing the difference between a distracted mind and an overloaded filter is the first step toward a more accessible world. ❤️‍🩹 If this resonates, comment “Filtered” and follow for more neurodivergent insights.
