Automaticity means instant, effortless identification—of letters and words. There’s a huge difference between identifying letters and sounds within a few seconds versus naming them instantly. 🐶The same goes for reading /d/ /o/ /g/ compared to just reading “dog.” 🧠When a student has to tap out every sound in every word, that effort adds up quickly. So much cognitive energy is spent on decoding that there’s very little left for comprehension. 🙌🏻This is especially important for struggling readers, who typically need much more practice to reach automaticity. Accuracy alone isn’t enough. 📖Without instant, effortless recognition, reading remains slow, exhausting, and inefficient. 🤩Automaticity is what allows struggling readers to read with greater ease—and finally focus on meaning. 👉 To learn how to support this process, read our blog post: How to Help Emergent and Struggling Readers Develop Automaticity. 🔗Comment BLOG for link! #readingtips #phonics #sightwords #literacy #literacymatters

🎥 Automaticity in Action! Watch my students practicing nonsense words with the vowel team patterns ee/ea using our speed slide routine. Why nonsense words? Because students can’t rely on memorization — they have to truly apply their phonics skills. This helps build automaticity, accuracy, and reading fluency. The best part? This routine works with ANY phonics pattern or syllable type, making it a quick and powerful way to strengthen decoding skills. Why Simple Tasks Are So Hard for Smart Neurodivergent Kids (Automaticity Explained) Your child isn’t struggling because they don’t know how. They’re struggling because every step still takes effort. For many neurodivergent kids, tasks like reading, writing, math facts, or getting dressed never become automatic. That means their brain is already exhausted before learning even begins. Slow doesn’t mean lazy. It means overloaded. When we lower time pressure and reduce cognitive load, skills have room to stick. Save this if your “bright but slow” child has been misunderstood. #AutismAwareness #NeurodivergentParenting #SpecialEducation #education #ADHDParenting

I created Backward Decoding to help my students build automaticity at the phoneme and word level! Instead of looking at the first letter and guessing, Backward Decoding forces students to pay close attention to the individual sounds in a word. What comes after the c or g? 👉 c + e, i, y → /s/ 👉 g + e, i, y → /j/ When students read all the way through and notice the vowel that follows, they can determine the sound with accuracy. No guessing. No hoping. Just pattern recognition grounded in orthographic knowledge. Backward decoding slows them down in the best way — helping them attend to every grapheme and make intentional sound choices. Explicit instruction > incidental exposure. Patterns over memorization. Knowledge builds confidence. Backward Decoding is available in ALL foundational literacy skills… short vowels, long vowels, r-controlled vowels, vowels teams, diphthongs, multisyllabic words… I’ve created it all! You can snag all the sets on TPT and my website! A tricky word list. Important words. High-frequency words. Words children meet every day in early readers. When they come home in plain font, some children manage easily. Some need a little more support before automaticity develops. This resource supports the work already being done in school, which is rooted in explicit phonics instruction. It doesn’t replace that foundation. It adds temporary visual scaffolds, deliberately stepped down — from full support, to black and white, and back to standard print. So when children meet the school version again, it feels familiar. Support first. Independence always. Same words. Clearer pathway. Confidence grows quietly in the background.

Multi-tasking is a myth. We can DO two things at once, but we cannot FOCUS on 2 things at once. If we have automaticity for a task, meaning we don’t have to think about it, we can do and focus on another task at the same time (for example, chewing gum while reading). But if we are trying to focus on two tasks, like texting and driving, or doing homework while writing an email, we have to switch tasks. And this can be stressful, drain our energy and in the case of driving, be dangerous. Task switching costs can include making increased errors, decreasing efficiency, not finishing tasks and added stress and fatigue. Kids, especially think that they can multitask, and this exercise is a great way to demonstrate that our brains can’t do it, and when they try, it is effortful (my son who did this has a 4.7 gpa and is taking college classes at age 16). Comment “focus” to receive a link a bundle of resources to teach kids about concepts like multi-tasking. #multitasking #executivefunction #attention

Why do you forget words when speaking English? 🤔 Most learners think it’s because they are translating in their head… but that’s only part of the story. The real issue is something called automaticity. This means your brain knows the word, but can’t find it fast enough when you need it. So you pause. You hesitate. And the word disappears. This gets worse when you’re trying to do too much at once: – thinking about grammar – trying to be correct – trying to sound natural Your brain gets overloaded. The solution is not more grammar. It’s more speaking practice in real time. Try this: Speak for 1–2 minutes without stopping. No scripts. No perfection. Just keep going. This trains your brain to access words faster and builds real fluency. If you understand a lot of English but struggle to speak, this is exactly what you need. #learnenglish #englishspeaking #englishfluency #speakenglish

Fluency doesn’t come from reading a text once and moving on. It develops through practice with the same text. Decades of research on repeated reading show that when students read a short passage multiple times with support and feedback, they improve in accuracy, automaticity, and expression. Researchers like Timothy Rasinski, Jan Hasbrouck, and Sharon Vaughn have consistently found that repeated reading is one of the most effective ways to build reading fluency. And the reason is simple. The first read is often focused on figuring out the words. The second and third reads allow students to read more smoothly and with understanding because the decoding work becomes easier. A simple way to use this in your classroom: • Choose a short decodable passage or controlled text • Have students read it once for accuracy • Provide quick feedback or support with tricky words • Read the same passage again • Read it a third time focusing on smooth, expressive reading This routine takes just a few minutes, but over time it helps students move from word-by-word reading to fluent reading. Fluent reading isn’t about constantly introducing new texts. Sometimes it’s about giving students the chance to practice and become confident.
