METhe Aztecs did not invent chocolate. So who did?
Long before the rise of the Aztec Empire, a largely forgotten civilisation known as the Olmecs were cultivating and consuming cacao over 2,000 years earlier. Often described as the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica, the Olmecs laid the foundations for many traditions later adopted by the Maya and Aztecs, including the ritual use of cacao.
Archaeological evidence suggests the Olmecs drank cacao rather than ate it. It was not an everyday sweet treat, but a powerful and symbolic substance used in ceremonies and likely reserved for elites. Cacao was revered, valued, and deeply embedded in spiritual life.
Chocolate was not the only crop they cultivated. The Olmecs also grew peanuts, known as cacahuates. Peanuts were an important source of nutrition and plant-based protein. They were ground into pastes and sauces, forming part of a balanced and nourishing diet.
Today, chocolate and peanuts are often associated with sugary confectionery. Yet historically, when cacao and peanuts were combined, they formed a nutrient-rich pairing packed with protein and antioxidants. Both ingredients are native to Central America. They evolved in the same regions, were cultivated by the same early civilisations, and were quite literally born to be enjoyed together.
Understanding the Olmecs changes the way we see chocolate. It was never just a dessert. It began as a sacred drink, a ceremonial food, and part of a sophisticated agricultural tradition that shaped the flavours we still love today.
