Similarly, objects can precariously balance on a tiny area, like a knife on its tip. In these cases, the center of gravity sits exactly above the contact point, cancelling the tilting torques from gravity and the normal force. These examples show that analyzing force and torque distribution is key to understanding static equilibrium. When an object is submerged, it pushes aside some liquid to make space for itself. The displaced liquid then pushes back upward. This happens because fluid pressure increases with depth. The pressure at the bottom of the object is higher than at the top, leading to a net upward lift. Whether an object sinks or floats depends on the balance between its weight and this upward force.
