MAAustralia just admitted it has about 36 days of petrol on hand.
Read that again.
Just over a month.
And with tensions rising in the Middle East, energy experts are already warning fuel prices could spike.
Australia’s Energy Minister Chris Bowen was speaking about the situation when the numbers came out.
That alone should make people pause.
Because this is not some small economy.
This is one of the richest countries in the world and yet its fuel security depends heavily on global supply chains continuing to flow smoothly.
And right now the world is anything but smooth.
A war involving Iran, Israel and the United States is unfolding right near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical oil shipping routes on the planet.
About 20 percent of the world’s oil moves through that narrow corridor.
If anything disrupts it, the shockwaves are global.
Prices move.
Supply tightens.
Countries that rely on imports start feeling nervous.
And the comments under the news say a lot about how people are processing it.
One person asked
“Are you saying that in 40 days all Australian cars are done for?”
Another joked
“And what happens after the 30 days? We don’t have to work anymore?”
Obviously it doesn’t work like that. Fuel keeps arriving through imports.
But the real takeaway is this.
Many modern economies are running on very thin buffers.
Everything works beautifully when the system is stable.
But when geopolitics heats up, people suddenly realize how fragile that system really is.
Energy security is not just about oil anymore.
It is about shipping routes, wars, alliances and global stability.
And right now all of those things are under pressure.

ANAustralia’s fuel security is too important for empty assurances.
When Chris Bowen talks about energy policy, I don’t think many Australians take much comfort — especially after years of promises about electricity prices coming down.
With growing uncertainty overseas, we should be strengthening Australia’s own fuel supplies and reserves, not relying on the hope that global markets will always deliver.
But investment in refining and fuel supply is being discouraged by red tape, green tape and heavy-handed IR laws that make it harder for industry to invest here.
If the government is serious about Australia’s fuel security, it needs to start removing the barriers to investment — not adding more of them.
