ZIThe Beartooth Highway is a stunning, 68-mile scenic drive on US Highway 212 between Red Lodge, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone National Park at Cooke City, Wyoming, known as one of America’s most beautiful drives. Open seasonally from late May or early June to early October, it features dramatic ascents, alpine tundra, glacial lakes, and a summit at 10,947 feet. The highway can be dangerous due to its narrow sec-tions, switchbacks, potential for limited guardrails, and elevation changes, so drivers should be prepared and pay attention.
Shoshone National Forest is the home of this scenic drive through the Beartooth Mountains as it covers 1.4 million acres, with 1300 miles of hiking trails along the way. This Forest awes millions of visitors a year with its astonishing views of one of the most rugged and wild areas in the lower 48 states.

KAWatch as this young grizzly bear (brown bear) looks under rocks for cutworm moth larvae. It was wonderful watching this young female, recently kicked out by mom, out it on her own, foraging for her own food and becoming her own bear. Also, she was so blonde/silver! PAIncredible day with “The Friendly Pod” the CA51s! We had a Channel Islands Killer Whale Quest scheduled today, but the waters were forecast to be too rough. So instead we decided to operate a Humpback trip closer to the harbor.
Just 5 miles out, and before any Humpbacks were sighted, we saw spouts and tall black dorsals! The family had just finished eating something and was in a super friendly mood. The CA51s are known to be very welcoming and curious of boats, especially after enjoying a meal! They were just seen last week in the Santa Monica Bay, and before that a few weeks ago on the backside of Catalina.
Amazingly, we also saw a person making a channel swim this morning from Anacapa to the mainland coast, and they just so happened to be directly in the path of the Orcas! A quick curious investigation was all the drama that unfolded, as wild orcas are not a threat to humans.

This is not part of our regularly scheduled tour experience, but this was a special drive for my North Carolina guests that had booked a 3-day trip with me…
For guests that book multiple days, I try to vary our time together and as the “most scenic byway in North America” was recently opened for the season, we took a drive up to 10,947’ (3,336.65 meters) in elevation.
Built between 1931-1936, this route offers travelers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the pristine beauty of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains. The highway provides breathtaking panoramic views, cold alpine lakes, cascading waterfalls and so much more! It is not a drive for the faint of heart or anyone with motion sickness or a fear of heights. The road is a phenomenal drive that connects Red Lodge and Cooke City, Montana, well beyond the Northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park.
