In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Northumberland, a town known for its mining communities, became home for many migrant families. With these families, came various breeds of terriers. These dogs influenced the Bedlington Terrier we know and love today. Among those who helped shape the breed was Squire Trevelyan, who owned a notable strain of terriers in 1782. These dogs were prized for their stamina, courage, loyalty, and determination. They possessed long muscular jaws, narrow heads, flat cheeks, and flat, deep ribs. Their ears hung close to the head, and many displayed a distinctive liver-colored coat. While their exact lineage is unknown, Otterhounds and even Bull Terriers were potentially used in the creation of the Bedlington. Though, record keeping was quite sporadic in the 1700s. “The Head of a Lamb and the Heart of a Lion” is the Bedlington Terrier Club of America’s motto, and for good reason. These dogs were (and still are) prized for their tenacity and true terrier spirit. Need vermin taken care of?
