It’s not going to create a ‘rod for your own back’.
It’s not going to make your baby too attached to you (what does that even mean???)
It’s going to help your baby feel safe and help you get a lot more sleep ☁️
Why do I always talk about this? Because I felt shame for co-sleeping with my first child.
Because everyone is obsessed with babies sleeping through the night by themselves and it’s just not the reality for so many babies which in turn adds stress to parents.

KABeing able to nurse my baby in the side-lying position is has been my saving grace this postpartum. Since we bedshare, I don’t have to get up or even open my eyes before she’s latched and we’re both back to sleep.
But! I hear from lots of parents that this is a hard position to master.
One CRUCIAL first step is to always… ALWAYS… slide your baby down first. Way lower than your breast!
The reason is because we want them “looking up” while they’re latched - their chin up high off their chest.
If we think about it, this makes perfect sense. Try drinking a glass of water with your chin tucked down - basically impossible, right? But as soon as our chin comes up? We have way more tongue mobility and can easily swallow big gulps.
A few more tips that can help you master side-lying nursing:
👉👈 Make sure you and your baby are both lying on your side, not on your back
🙏🏼 There shouldn’t be any space between you and baby - you’re belly to belly
🙅🏼♀️Babies arms shouldn’t be criss-crossed across their chest - it’s ok if one of their arms is resting underneath your breast!
🔙 Push the shoulder you’re lying on backwards - this will help protrude your breast so it’s easier for your baby to stay latched
🫴 Try holding your breast if it feels like your baby is having a hard time locating the nipple or staying latched
Keep practicing - most babies get it at some point and it can make life soo much easier 🙌🏽

I’m resharing this because we still bedshare for half the night at almost 4
and It’s a comment I hear more than you’d think. And every time, I can’t help but pause.
When you say my poor partner –
do you mean we lack intimacy?
That we can’t possibly be close unless we’re sharing a bed?
Do you think I’m not prioritising them,
because I’ve chosen to meet the sleep needs of our child…
rather than meet someone else’s expectations of what a couple should do?
Is it just that I’m not following the societal script of sleeping in the ‘marital bed’, together?
And when you say they’ve been “kicked out” – what exactly do you mean? Do you think they had no say in how our child is parented through the night?
What assumptions !!
And for the record – if bedsharing isn’t working for your family anymore, of course, it’s totally okay to change things up. I help families do this all the time.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
