This is our bedtime routine for my very wired 6-year-old. He doesn’t need silence, stillness, or “calm down” at bedtime. He needs proprioceptive input, the kind that helps his nervous system feel grounded and safe. Pushing, jumping, deep pressure, playful connection, these aren’t winding him up. They’re helping his body come down. For some children, bedtime struggles aren’t behavioural. They’re physiological. Once his body feels regulated, sleep follows far more easily. If your child is bouncing, wriggling, climbing or hyper at bedtime, it doesn’t necessarily mean they need less input. Sometimes, they need more of the right kind. ✨ As always, every child is different, this won’t suit everyone, but it’s something many families haven’t been told to try. Not all children find deep pressure regulating, always follow your child’s cues. If you need help working out what kind of nervous system input your child needs comment “INPUT” below
