This week’s Wednesday on the Watch we wanted to highlight the art of slowing down through mindful birding. Some times when life gets busy, it’s refreshing to explore nature without the added pressure of identifying everything you come across! If you’re looking for inspiration for how to learn more about mindful birding, you can check out the @mindfulbirdingnetwork no matter where you call home. If you’re in the Cape May area, consider joining us for our Mindful Birding event with @nature_nj this Sunday from 8:00am to 10:30am! We are excited to be collaborating with TNC again for this inclusive birding outing and tour of the South Cape May Meadows as a part of Birdability Week 2025. This event is open to people of all birding levels, from first-timers to pros. Together at a leisurely pace, we will explore one and a half mile of trail at the South Cape May Meadows Preserve. While birding, visitors will learn about the preserve’s history, ecology and habitat. About halfway through the tour, we will gather at the observation platform on the Boardwalk Trail to practice mindful birding for about 20 minutes. This practice aims to deeply engage with and enjoy the birds and nature around you. In response to the crisis our communities are facing in Crown Heights, we invited our artist community to offer programming for #FMNatureSchool this fall that supports the creation of tools for ecological and social resilience and restoration. We will be grounding fall 2025 Nature School in Octavia E. Butler’s 1993 speculative fiction, Parable of the Sower, continuing our year-long dialogue on @thisismold with this transformative text. It’s okay if you haven’t read the book—its themes are a prescient reminder that we need spiritual, social, and physical tools to prepare our communities for the uncertainty of the moment. Seed saving, foraging, education as a means for fortifying community, bartering, preparing for emergency, reading the landscape, and making space for joy, trust, rest and love to blossom, are all fundamental tools. Join us for our Seeds and Squash Equinox Festival —the kickoff of the Fall 2025 Nature School — Saturday, September 20th at the Brower Park Library!
