HOAfter 8 years of taking hormonal birth control or ‘the pill’ from the age of 15. I was told by my GP that I was no longer able to take them again. My blood pressure was dangerously high and I was at risk of getting blood clots.
I was put on the pill ‘Yasmin’ as I was told it would “fix” my hormonal acne and period pains. It was the ONLY option I had when I was asking for help and advice. Little did I know that birth control does NOT fix your symptoms, they simply just masks it.
After being told I won’t be prescribed birth control again and with no advice on what to do transitioning off the pill. I felt like I was thrown into the deep end, having no clue on what to expect. Will I feel different? Look different?
3 months later, I started noticing changes 👇
- My acne slowly came running back but eventually it was at its worst that I’ve ever seen.
- Faced digestive issues & constant bloating after every meal. I felt like I couldn’t eat anything without feeling so uncomfortable.
- Struggled with hair loss, sudden grey hairs appearing all over my head. Not knowing why or how this was happening?
- PMS symptoms & Menstrual pains - every cycle I was experiencing sharp back pains, painful cramps and constant migraines.
I felt so overwhelmed by the constant changes, feeling so disconnected to my body and helpless on what to do to make it all go away.
But I’m here to tell you the good news! It does get better! And I’m grateful to be off birth control. After 2 years of trial & errors. I finally listened to my body, learnt how our amazing hormones actually work. I started supporting my body instead of going against it.
These symptoms are all just SIGNS, signals to tell us there are underlying issues that need to be addressed. It won’t heal until we stop to listen.

(and although it’s non-hormonal, the copper IUD is NOT a better option) ⚠️
Maybe you’ve experienced some of these but you didn’t even know they were linked to BC💊
Unfortunately, these are only a few of the DOZENS of side effects that you can experience while on hormonal birth control
Whether it’s the pill, the IUD, the shot or the patch- they all come with a myriad of side effects...none of which are ideal 👎🏼
I know that I was NEVER told these things before going on birth control and if I had known- I would’ve thought long and hard about the risk vs the benefits of BC
There ARE other options to prevent pregnancy. No, they aren’t as simple as taking a pill or getting an implant but they are SIDE EFFECT FREE 🎉👏🏼
Getting off of hormonal birth control was both freeing AND empowering!
I know it feels scary at first but ya know whats scarier?? The thought of living your life plagued by these symptoms day after day
Birth control doesn’t regulate your period, nor is it fixing your hormonal acne. It is simply a band aid solution to a deeper issue.
Healing your cycle and balancing your hormones is possible 🫶🏼✨
