the most magical surf of my life ✨ surfing in the bioluminescence will go down as one of my most memorable sessions. everything came together: we had a bright full moon 🌕, clear skies, off-shore wind, 3-5ft surf, a couple shooting stars and all the waves to ourselves. these vivid waves are a product of blooming microscopic plants called phytoplankton that glow neon blue in turbulent waters. with every paddle, we were surrounded by bright blue glowing water. the @gopro footage doesn’t do it justice. being out there was truly a magical experience. additional footage by brian press

It’s almost mountain wave season here in the Sierra Nevada! but that doesn’t mean you can’t find wind shear or severe turbulence before. Wind shear is a sudden, rapid change in wind speed and/or direction over a short distance, which can occur horizontally or vertically in the atmosphere. This phenomenon can dangerously alter an aircraft’s airspeed, altitude, and pitch, particularly during takeoff and landing. In this instance I’m coming in to land, and just before my wing dipped I did feel almost a pause in airflow. It happened so fast there wasn’t time to react other than to add speed and level my wings. Winds this day were only 25kts, though a front was coming in and KMEV is notorious for wash coming off the wall of Kingsbury grade to the west. This was honestly a mild incident of how wind shear can affect an aircraft. Stay vigilant everyone, blue skies 👍🏼
