The Hidden Wonders of Your Skeleton 💀 Did you know you were born with more bones than you have right now? 🤯 From the microscopic stapes in your ear to the powerhouse femur in your leg, the human skeleton is an absolute marvel of natural engineering. Here is a quick look at the framework holding you together: The Count: You have 206 bones now, but you started with around 270! The Heavyweight: Your femur is the longest, strongest, and heaviest bone. The Tiny Wonder: The stapes in your ear is only 3mm long. The Loner: The hyoid bone in your throat doesn't connect to any other bone. Which of these facts surprised you the most? Restoring a 80+ year old human skeleton that spent decades in a high school. This antique medical specimen came to me with loose articulation, decades of dust, corroded hardware, and unstable joints. Over 6 hours, I carefully documented, cleaned, and re-articulated using period-appropriate conservation techniques. Notice the hand-wired vertebrae and clay cartilage?- both hallmarks of early/mid 20th century anatomical preparation. This person donated their body to science, and I’m honored to continue their educational legacy through proper stewardship and preservation. This skeleton will return to a private medical collection where it will continue teaching anatomy for generations to come. All human remains in our collection are antique medical specimens obtained through legal and ethical channels. We do not support the illegal bone trade. Questions about ethical bone collecting? It’s one of those fascinating quirks of human biology that feels counterintuitive—usually, we expect to grow more of things as we get bigger, not fewer. Here is a quick breakdown of how and why that happens: Why the number drops When you are born, many of your "bones" are actually made of cartilage. This flexibility is essential because it allows a baby to fit through the birth canal and provides the "give" needed for rapid physical growth. As you age, a process called ossification occurs. The cartilage centers gradually turn into hard bone, and separate segments fuse into single, solid structures. Where the "disappearing" bones go The most dramatic examples of this fusion happen in these areas: The Skull: A newborn’s skull has several separate plates (separated by "soft spots" or fontanelles). These eventually knit together into one solid protective casing for the brain. The Spine: At birth, you have 33 individual vertebrae. By adulthood, the bones at the very bottom fuse to form the sacrum and the coccyx (tailbone). The Pelvis: What we think of as one hip bone actually starts as three separate bones (the ilium, ischium, and pubis) that fuse during your teenage years. #facts #didyouknowfacts #DidYouKnow

206 bones—where are they all? 🦴 Big thanks to Anatomy App @anatomy.app for the incredible photo references that helped bring this breakdown to life! The human skeleton is a masterpiece of engineering, but have you ever counted every single bone? From the 22 bones in the skull to the 56 in your hands and feet, let’s break it down (without breaking any bones). Stick around as we go from head to toe, uncovering the full skeletal story! #Anatomy #Bones #SkeletalSystem #science

Step into a realm where history and science converge at The Bone Museum in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. In our latest video, we’re unveiling several extraordinary new arrivals: an incredibly rare pediatric skeleton. We’re also taking a close look at a skull with double trephination and a femur affected by osteomyelitis—powerful reminders of how illness, injury, and intervention leave permanent signatures in bone And, of course, Bone Jovi couldn’t resist making a cameo, leaping up onto a few of the cases mid-filming like he runs the place (because… he kind of does). 🐾💀

Gigantism vs. Acromegaly: Both gigantism and acromegaly are caused by excess growth hormone, but when that hormone is released makes all the difference. In this video, we compare two real skulls, our very own Bone Museum Giant, and a real human skull replica, to show how timing shapes the skeleton. The skull affected by gigantism is noticeably longer, with an elongated face and an extended lower jaw. This happens when excess growth hormone is present before growth plates close, allowing the entire skeleton, including the skull, to grow longer than average. In contrast, the skull affected by acromegaly is broader and more robust. Because acromegaly develops after growth plates have fused, bones can no longer lengthen. Instead, they thicken and widen, leading to heavier facial features, enlarged jawbones, and increased bone mass. By studying real skeletal remains, we can see how the same hormone imbalance produces dramatically different outcomes.

At The Bone Museum, we don’t believe education ends at the display case. It includes provenance, systems, and the ethical questions that come with medical history. In this video, we discuss the sourcing and acquisition history behind some of the skeletons in the collection, with a primary focus on Carolina Biological Supply, and we place it within the broader context of the medical bone trade. This is a long, global, and deeply complex history — shaped by changing medical demands, donation requests, and the tensions that developed within the trade over time. No single video can capture every detail or perspective, but we’re committed to transparency: sharing what we know, acknowledging what we don’t. We are looking forward to making more videos on this in the future let us know if you have any questions below!

Do bones at the Bone Museum contain lead? 🦴🔬 Today we’re using an X-ray fluorescent spectrometer to find out, and the answer isn’t as straightforward as you’d think. Lead can enter bone for many reasons: from historical preservation chemicals used in the medical bone trade… to lifetime exposure during the individual’s life. Because bone acts like a long-term storage system for heavy metals, it can hold clues about everything from past occupations and environmental exposure to the preparation methods used after death. Join us as we scan real human bones to see what trace elements are hiding inside, and what their presence can tell us about the life and history of each specimen. Thank you to Eric from @ericeverythinglead for helping us look for lead traces!
