We out here chilling with native parasitic plants growing in a old growth forest in the mountains of Northern California. Snow plants are one of the coolest plants you can find in the old growth forest. These plants are fully parasitic with no chlorophyll which is why they are completely red. Snow plants parasitize the mushrooms that have a symbiotic relationship with trees. Tho some studies show snow plants actually help keep those forest mycelium networks heathly and running. Just another classic example of why we need to protect intact native forest ecosystems from loggers. SWAMP CARNIVORES Carnivores lurking in dark waters - and I’m not talking about gators! This aquatic carnivorous plant is found across Florida in lakes, ponds, and ditches. Utricularia inflata Swollen Bladderwort Lentibulariaceae We have fifteen species of Utricularia native to Florida. These highly specialized plants are infamous for feeding on small aquatic invertebrates they catch in their bladder-like traps. The unsuspecting prey brush against tiny hairs that trigger a trapdoor on the pressurized traps. As the trap suddenly opens, the organism and water are sucked into the bladder. With the bladder full and the door closed, the plant releases enzymes to digest the organism. The process takes less than a second and is one of the most sophisticated and fast processes in the plant kingdom. But they don’t just eat animals - they also trap and digest algae! That’s why many of the traps in this video are black. This seems to be opportunistic feeding, as the algae is inadvertently also sucked in when the traps are triggered.
