So let’s break down the difference:
A demand is a request for someone else to change so that you can feel comfortable and is rooted in control. You tell them what they need to do. It sounds like “you need to…” or “don’t do that.” There’s pressure behind it, even if it’s subtle.
A boundary is a declaration of what you will do, shifting the focus back to you. It clearly says what you will do if something doesn’t work for you. You decide what standard you will accept, and you take action when that standard is not met. You protect your own peace.
When you shift from demands to boundaries, you stop waiting for permission to feel secure. You stop hoping they will finally understand your exhaustion. You take the wheel back.
