The Bowhead whale, also called Arctic or Greenland whale. 🐋 Video by @taichi_maruyama Bowheads are the only baleen whales that spend their entire lives in the Arctic seas. They are among the longest-living mammals on earth, reaching over 200 years of age! Thanks to their layers of fat over half a meter thick and a forehead so powerful that they can pierce up to two feet of ice sheets to breathe, they have conquered some of the harshest conditions in the world. 🐳❄

Masters of the ice 🐋❄️ Bowhead whales are true Arctic legends — some living for over 200 years - the oldest living mammal! With powerful skulls, they can break through ice up to two feet thick just to breathe. Once hunted nearly to extinction around Svalbard, only a few survived. So every sighting we get around the pack ice feels like a gift. . . . #bowheadwhale #bowhead #arctic #packice #ice #whales #wildlife #sonynordic #earthcapture #animals #whales #marinemammals

TikTok user encounters this incredible bowhead whale in Nunavut! 🐋 The only surviving member of the genus Balaena is the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), a species of baleen whale in the family Balaenidae. They are the only baleen whale endemic to the Arctic and subarctic waters, and are named after their characteristic massive triangular skull, which they use to break through Arctic ice. 🎥 ralphsuqslak via tiktok 📍 Pond Inlet, Nunavut, Canada 🇨🇦

Bowhead whales take “having a thick skin” to a whole new level—literally! With up to 50 centimetres (19 inches) of blubber, they’re the ultimate masters of staying warm and unbothered in the Arctic.  Here are five more bowhead whale facts:  • Bowhead whales can live for over 200 years.  • They consume up to 2 tonnes of food daily.  • They can grow up to 20 metres (65 feet) long and weigh as much as 100 tonnes (220,462 pounds).  • Bowhead whales have two blowholes.  • They are named for the distinct shape of their heads, which make up one-third of their total body length.    Video by @beyer_photo

How would you feel if 100 tons of whales were swimming underneath you? This is a bowhead whale that lives up to 200 years. I will send everyone who writes how many whales there were in the video a link to wallpaper with whales. <- Imagine, these whales may personally remember the very height of whaling in the last century, when oil products had not yet replaced blubber and whalebone and saved the population. Wrangel Bay and the Shantar Islands are considered to be home to the largest population of Bowhead whales, and this is where you can snorkel with them. There are approximately 400 individuals in the Sea of Okhotsk, and up to 100 enter the bay at a time. They itch here on the stones, freeing themselves from old skin, and therefore scientists assume that this place serves as a kind of beauty salon for them. Killer whales, which periodically come to chase bowhead whales, use the bay as a training ground for young killer whales. However, bowhead whales are careful, and if they are not fleeing from killer whales, then it is safe to swim with them - they will not even raise a wave.

Humpback whales have incredibly long fins. You especially notice it when you look at photos or videos of other whale spacies, or videos like this. Look how flexible and floppy they are. These fins help to make humpbacks very agile, able to maneuver and turn even faster and more tightly then smaller animals. I’m always impressed by their maneuverability and it makes me realize just how clumsy we humans are in the sea.

One more visit with the Crack Whales of Baffin Island. 🧊🐋 I know you’re probably tired of whale videos by now, but I’ll share this last one, which could also be titled “Whale Breaths,” because I turned the sound up so you can hear these big bebes breathing. 😍 In case you missed my first post about these bowhead whales, they were hanging out in a crack in the sea ice not far from open water in Baffin Bay (so no, they aren’t stuck!). They seemed to just be curiously bobbing along in the crack - I think maybe they were having as much fun as we were watching them. We were close to the crack, yes, but we were also with local Inuit guides who were right there with us with their smartphones out. 🤳🏻 No one fell in. 🙃 Enjoy, because I’ll have some new and different content for you soon!

The rarest encounter Ive ever had, and no its not AI, meet one of the deepest animal on earth the Blainville’s Beaked whale. These whales are some of the most elusive mammals on the planet. They spend only a few minutes at the surface between dives that can last over an hour and plunge to depths of 1,000–1,500 meters, making close encounters almost impossible. Blainville’s beaked whales are part of the largest but least-known group of whales on Earth, the beaked whales, with over 20 species that remain shrouded in mystery. They use extreme suction feeding to hunt squid in the deep ocean and theres barely information about them. Permit 3298 MPR/DIREN #beakedwhales #rarewhales #deepanimals #expeditions

And then there were whales. 🐋 Bowhead whales, to be exact. My trip to the Arctic was marketed as a narwhal and polar bear safari. But, as it turned out, those weren’t the creatures we were destined to see. Instead, the stars of our own private Arctic show were bowhead whales - which I admit to never having heard of prior to this trip! Bowheads only live in Arctic waters, and were hunted almost to extinction in the 1800s and early 1900s. Now they are protected, with a population estimated to be around 12,000 (in contrast, there are an estimated 80,000-100,000 narwhals in the wild). Bowheads are the 5th-largest whales in the world, averaging around 50 feet long and weighing up to 100 tons. They can live probably about 200 years (no one knows for sure, because they haven't been studied much!), and are capable of diving really deep and holding their breath for up to 90 minutes. We were lucky enough to see TONS of these incredible whales, sometimes just bobbing feet away from us, or diving under the ice right beneath our feet. It was so special to get to spend time with the gentle giants, and I hope you enjoy these clips! (All the “whoa”s and “wow”s were totally genuine.) 📍For everyone new to this account finding this video, this was from an expedition-style trip I did to Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet) on Baffin Island in the territory of Nunavut. I traveled with a company called Arctic Kingdom, and we had mostly Inuit guides sharing their expertise and beautiful land with us.
